You need to answer the following questions

- what semester are u? Is it first semester of 100 level?
- what's the maximum GPA for your school (4.0 or 5.0)
- how many years is your course? (3, 4, or 5)
- which course n which school are you studying (some schools like unilorin dont have anything to do with your 100level cgpa for engineering students for instance, they start computing cgpa from 200 level)

My story is exactly as yours.. Same Mechanical Engineering but Uniuyo.. Had 2.5 CGPA in 200level but graduated with 2:1

During my time at Unilorin, I had CGPA of 2.8X... (cant remember the exact point now) in my 200L, I was studying Mechanical Engineering.

I graduated with a 2.1.

You are not likely to hit a first class.... 2.1 is still possible, if you make friends with the A's.

I wept sore when I saw my CGPA in first year. It was 2.97. I wept bitterly. Some of my friends I knew I was better off had from 3.2 upwards. My target, though, when I gained admission was Second Class Upper Division (2:1).
Victor and Chidi were my friends then. Victor came to me and said to me “Divine, I know you are better than this. You can still make it up in this second year and subsequent sessions “. Those words ignited the fire in me to get more studious. My second year was also not that good. But my third and final years in the university was do or die for me. I had 4.24 and up in the remaining four semesters. I was able to graduate with 3.55 CGPA. I finally made 2:1.

For your question, it might be difficult but not impossible dear.

Honestly, if its in a Public University, YOU CANNOT.

You probably cannot graduate with a first class going by a simple mathematics.. It's very hard to jump just two step in CGPA and that's why your chances are just so slim

Mathematically you can make a first class. Also based on personal experience, I know people that made first class after having a similar GPA in their first year in school

But as someone said earlier, what matters most is making it in life not just first class.

Mathematically speaking, if you can keep getting a minimum G.P of 4.7 till you graduate then first class is feasible.

I'm sorry, u can't... However u may target a 2:1 and more importantly, concentrate on skill acquisition. Let relevance of skill and its indispensability guide u in making a choice. Private universities have bastardized 1st class don't build ur sense of worth around it.

Since federal university of technology Minna just released their result I guess you are in the school... I am also in the above school. 500l microbiology too..

To be sincere to you..you can't make first class ...but a strong 2.1 is possible if you are writing 4.5 and above in the rest semesters you have in school

just remove first class out of the equation. to be honest even 2.1 is bleak cos d easiest level is 100L. its a rough road as u go higher.

But you must first Discover your track, cos it's only a fööl who does things the same way every time and expect a different Result.

You can change your clique of friends and find the High flying students in your department/level and mingle with.

You can also change your reading time and Pattern,

You could gather PQs and also study wide by consulting Online/Textbooks.

A few mistakes 100L students make first year in school is Their inability to Understand the system of the school, and also lack of proper orientation.

Put in your best and also Pray Fervently.

I had 2.95 in my first semester and I came out with second class upper. I went to Funaab, studied mechanical engineering. Once you under the system you are good to Go. I agree to all what you said. I want Op to stick to this advice. But I'm not in supporting of you studying wide.

For you to have moved from 2.5 CGPA in 200 level to 3.5 or above shows you were very determined and this should be a source of inspiration to our undergraduates whose hope must have dipped.

Pls I know of one man who claimed to be a mechanical engineering graduate with specialisation in phone repairs. Is there anything like that?

Op, with determination and focus, you can make a very comfortable first class. But note you must be hitting above 4.5 GPA for the remaining 7 semesters. Yes, 7 semesters since it is a university of technology where one session will be for IT. Also make sure you score A in your IT which is 5 points.

But graduating with 2.1 isn't that bad anyway, so don't kill yourself. After all, I know a mechanical engineering graduate with specialisation in phone repairs who is doing fine presently in online trolling and begging.

Why do you people like giving people false hope like Nigerian pastors. The op can never make a first class even if he gets 4.5 cgpa for the remaining semesters of his stay in that school. He's already having a negative in his first semester, which will continue to count against him till he graduates.
With that gp, I assume there must be Es and Ds in some courses, with possible F in others. One thing about cgpa is that it increase with a snail speed and decreases with the speed of light.
An E, D, or F will continue to affect your cgpa till you graduate.
I'm saying this from the view of someone who has worked in exam office in a federal university of technology.
With 2.88, 2:1 will be a difficult task for the op, but achievable. First class? Impossible. The op can take that to the bank. He should aim at hitting the 3.5 cgpa for a 2:1 first.

Your focus shouldn't be entirely on making first class. Your focus should be to get a good grasp of every course you take henceforth. Your focus should be to stand tall and tell people what you studied, its uses and what you've gained so far. Strive to become an expert at what you're studying and I can assure that even if you don't make a firstly class, you have something that will make you an expert in your studies. It's not all about the grade one finishes with, it's about how much of your course content that you find relevant. (This should alone should get one at least a 2:1)
