Re: Sanusi Lamido Is A Liar. Lawmakers by orgasm(m): 4:13am On Dec 01, 2010
spearman:

Legislators should be a part time job. They should be seated no more than 90 days a year. The more they meet the bigger the damages done to the Nation. Greeks and Romans were part time lawmakers and so are the American large states like Texas and Michigan with California to follow soon.

We need part-time legislators that will be paid only seating allowances. This system is unsustainable and will inevitably lead the military to come back.
I strongly agree with dis school of thoughts. Our legislasture should be a call to duty and a clarion call so should be on part time basis as it were in the times of those that invented and introduce democracy to d world(Romans,Greeks) and some states in d biggest democracy in d world,USA. This will bring in patrotic, intelligent and dedicated human resources who are genuinely concern about the growth and development of the country rather than go there primarily for d bogus salaries and allowances that is demeaning in d face that a civil servant cant get 18k as minimum wages and millions of nigerians go to bed without food, die in govt hospitals without drugs, die in highways cos of bad roads, get robbed, raped and killed even in broad daylight cos of no adequate funding of security operatives.schools on strike, nigerians living under d bridge and shanties, dieing of water borne dieases,no substainable electricity.i can go on and on. Lets call for a change! It has to start with u and i. Lets start by condemning them and shout to d whole world that what we need is a part time legislature. Say ur part today!

Whether he got the percentage right or not,at least we've all known all along that a monstrous chunk of our budget is being shared and eaten in the senate and house of reps, now that Sanusi has jolted them and woken us all from our slumber to examine the criminal appropriations by those greedy leeches in the national assembly, the whole nation;civil society groups, labour, military and paramilitary should rise up and challlenge them till they reduce their greedy criminal pays. That reminds me,I wonder why that busy body pastor Tunde Bakare has not said anything about this topic

Nigerians,arise and stop these criminals

SANUSI and AGANGA have the full support of the masses; most of those lawmakers especially BANKOLE are criminals. Look at the N6bn they approved for sim registration after work done.

As much as I detest the man of the National Assembly for adding little or no value to the country and yet siphoning so much to their individual pockets, am really worried about SLS. His penchant for unguided statements is worrisome.
SLS almost ruined Nigeria's aviation indistry by going to the Bankers' forum and declaring that all Nigerian airlines are insolvent. He almost ruined our financial industry by declaring that banks and the NSE are like casinos. More worrying is the fact that he comes back to aplogise and explain these statements. Why make them in the first place?
SLS should be seriously warned. He shouldn't make statements he would come back to renounce. How can the NA take 25% of our national budget? it is just not fiscally possible.

Xavier abeg go and sit down jare, Sanusi is telling us how people are plundering the economy and you are calling it loose talk, what should he do, connive with the lawmakers to plunder us some more, please listen to the radios and hear how Nigerians are now questioning the bogus amounts these people are chopping, the man dies in him who in the face of tyranny keeps silent.

Who should be held responsible? the legislator from your part of the country. He represents you at the national assembly and he owes you and explanation.

our politics need to be active. We need to challenege the people who say they represent us

Economics should be based on facts and not sentiments and emotions.

As much as we all hate these men of the NA and their profligacy, we should encourage baseless statements from those that should know better.

Re: Sanusi Lamido Is A Liar. Lawmakers by hercules07: 11:12am On Dec 01, 2010
Xavier maybe you should stand up then, so that you can see far. Sanusi has always backed up his claims with facts, we Nigerians need people who will tell us things as they are. I will rather be told the gloomy news than finding out later when it is too late. Our bankers were cowboys doing what they liked, Sanusi not only exposed them, he also addressed the issues by bailing them out ( I wish he had not, see oil marketers asking for bailout as well). Legislators spending money in a reckless manner need to be exposed. Let me do a small arithmetic for you, what Mark earns in a year is enough to pay 55,000 workers minimum wage in a year or he can empower 55,000 people (216K per person), in 4 years his salary and allowances are enough to empower 220,000 people to start some small business, imagine if he spends that money on his constituency, will their life not be better? We need these people ridiculed.

As an economist u shd no d difference between total budget and recurrent expenditure which SLS is talking about.and if u run ur statistics very well u will agree with us dat a paltry 450 people are having more than a fair share of our national cake while a other 150million nigerians wallow in abject poverty

Unless Sanusi has a different explanation to make, the total overhead budgeted in 2010 appropriation is N2.1 trillion and the total budget of the National Assembly (both capital and overhead) in 2010 is N158 billion.

N158 billion(though both capital and recurrent of NASS) is still 7.4% of the the total FG overhead.

I do not support the NASS one bit but I think someone needs either provide a plausible explanation of the 25% or enroll for an administrative management for mouth diarrhea

Is really possible that Sanusi could deliberately be inciting public opinion, as claimed by the law makers, against the latter?

why would someone in his position deliberately distort figures, esp one that is easily verifiable?
Re: Sanusi Lamido Is A Liar. Lawmakers by sleekymag(m): 1:25pm On Dec 01, 2010
These lawmakers should be ashamed of themselves. They have done very little, in terms of contribution to making Nigeria better. How many bills have they passed? how many are still pending? They only have mouth to address small issues such as this. When Yar'adua was hospitalized in Saudi, it took them almost forever to do what they should and put an acting -president in place. So many things have not been addressed. What they earn yearly is JUST TOOOO MUCH. N158BILLION per year, They are there to serve not to milk our federation account.

Just imagine if all political office holders were earning the same as our doctors or university professors , how many of them would run for political office?

He may have been too excited and called 25%, 2.5%. He may have based his calculations on something else. He may have compared the figure to some other figure in the budget to arrive at his conclusion. But he wasnt far from the implied truth, dem NASS peeps are milking us dry. they do little to address issues that affect the common man. i wish we could squeeze their necks and get them to reduce these figure allocated to them by at least 75%. N39.5 billion should be more like it, rather than N158 bil.

Let us give ur 7.4% some benefit of doubt. Is it still not too much for 360 + 190 + few tens of staff of NASS? Let us assume that the total NASS plus staff are 1000 in number. Now this means that out of 150 million people, 1000 which is 0.0006666666666666666% of our population are taking 7.4%.

Is it fair?

I watched with utter dismay, surprise, disappointment and disgust the way and manner the MPS handled the alleged statement credited to the CBN Governor on the account of 25% overhead expenditure cost incurred by the National Assembly in the national budget. How else can one describe self-serving and self-aggrandized set of these endangered species? It is a known fact without appeal to pity/sentiments that they are one of the most paid and expensive legislators you can find anywhere in this planet.
Let us assume that Mallam Sanusi’s comment was sentimental or perhaps he was wrong in his analysis or at least the over-zealots of journalism went out of tune of his message, it will be out of tune to say or insinuate that the comment has brought upon them stigmatization and security concerns upon them and their families. This indeed is what I can call recklessness and show of shame. This is the same set of people that want to make themselves automatic members of NEC of their respective political parties. Infact, I was really surprised to watch Senator Mamora condemning the statement despite coming from the Progressives’ bloc. I was really disappointed to watch Honourable Dabiri canvassing against the statement. Perhaps they saw the truth but never wanted to admit on the floor of the House or else they will be heavily crucified by their thieving mates. These rogues are also seeking inclusion of ‘The Right of First Refusal’ into the Electoral Act; an attempt to make themselves life-serving legislators. Haba! This is enough laughter.
They want to exert the power that is not really vested in their domains, mind you, they have jacked up many times their remunerations without any recourse to laid-down procedures.
So, if Sanusi had raised an alarm that they are getting 25% is neither an understatement nor overstatement but an attestation to the state of our collective economic well-being. What these guys are earning are extremely dangerous and economically killing and has serious impacts on democratization. No wonder some analysts have said Nigerian democracy is more expensive than any other democracies in the world.
Since they have the statutory power to summon CBN Governor and others to explain his story but the message has already been passed and it is left for their conscience to dispel the truth or accept it.

The Day Sanusi Got It Wrong

The Day Sanusi Got It Wrong

If one relies on some government officials he is likely to be misled. They will gather the wrong data, analyze it wrongly and reach the wrong conclusion. We the public do not know them. They are behind the scenes. If anything happens, it is their bosses who bear the brunt. They will formulate the wrong policies using such wrong conclusions or make inaccurate public statements.

Is it a deliberate attempt by such officials to mess up with their bosses or is it an innocent product of their incompetence? If I were Sanusi L. Sanusi, the Central Bank Governor, or Olusegun Aganga, this is the question that the Director of Budget must answer immediately. I will be surprised if he is not queried by this morning. From where did he get the N536.26billion as the total overhead cost of running the Nigerian government, which the CBN governor used to arrive at his conclusion that the National Assembly alone consumes 24% of the recurrent expenditure?

The case is really worse than this. The initial impression given in the media was that Sanusi said the National Assembly alone spends 25.4% of Nigeria's annual budget of N3.9trillion. The legislators did their homework, ascertained that, either way, Sanusi got it wrong, then summoned him along with the Minister of Finance. They made the minister to embarrassingly compute the percentage of N158billion, the assembly's annual budget, in the Federal Government's budget of N3.9trillion. He admitted that it is 3.77%.

Sanusi, as the Nation reported, insisted that he used official figures from the Director of Budget's office. But the legislators were smarter. To prove that he is wrong, they asked him the total budget of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the organ he is heading. He replied, "N303billion". Then they asked him: does it mean that CBN gets 57% of the total recurrent expenditure of the government? He did not reply, said The Nation. Ayya!

I smell a rat if it is true, as the Minister told the Senate Finance Committee, that Sanusi made his public statement a week before he got the document he relied on officially. Did someone in the Budget Office deliberately misled him into making such a statement? I think this mess should be sorted out between the apex Bank and the Ministry. These sort of embarrassing situations make us look foolish in an information age, if, in spite of having one of the highest manpower index in the world, we cannot sort out a simple arithmetic.

We must be fair enough to blame Sanusi also for the haste and imprudence of not cross-checking the figures. In mathematics, the entire process of how a figure is arrived at must be shown, step by step. In politics, he needs to be more careful. He should have demanded for verification because even to commoners like me the figure appeared highly improbable. Perhaps, it is because he is used to the more efficient system of the private sector all his life. Now he knows that government does not operate on that frequency.

More important for him is to go a step further to realize, especially with this development, that in government politics is preferred to mathematics. The wrong information might have been used to make him look silly in public. He should therefore apply the principle of verification (tabayyun) to the letter.

Sanusi is one of our few reliable human assets in this country. He is learned, transparent, prudent and, more importantly, egalitarian. Nigerians love him, and to some of us he is a former schoolmate and a friend. Yet, I must be strong to say that I did not like how the press handled the matter. Though I am not in any way in support of the jumbo salaries and allowances that the legislators and high government officials are receiving in the country, a feeling shared by majority of Nigerians, I expected the press to be humble in accepting that this time, at least, the legislators had the upper hand over the hero we so much cherish. Instead of reprimanding him, the press chose to side with Sanusi and emphasized the characteristically bold political statement he made, that he can resign.

In this discussion, regarding Sanusi, I have preferred al-Mutanabbi to Ibn Ammar, the poet of Caliph Abbad in Seville, in Muslim Spain. Ibn Ammar, in what would earn him the position of Master Poet in Abbad's court to the consternation of other poets was his disagreement with Crown Prince Muhammad over a line of the latter's qasidah in which he mentioned the low point of his father when his soldiers were once defeated in battle. "It was a shortcoming you would have concealed in respect to your father," Ibn Ammar critiqued the Prince. The Prince agreed. This is the choice of the Nigerian press.

The famous Al-Mutanabbi had a different approach. For the purpose of correction, the poet of the Abbasids said, "whoever is resolute must be hard, sometimes, on his favorite." This is my choice.
