Nigeria will lose more revenues from energy exports once Niger Republic starts generating her own electricity, it was gathered at the weekend.

Aside Niger Republic, the country, according to the Federal Ministry of Power, exports electricity valued at between $582 million and $665 million annually to countries such as Togo, Chad, and Benin Republic.

It exports between 350megawatts (Mw) and 400 Mw of electricity daily to those countries, with a view to generating more revenues and meet their energy needs.

Speaking on the side of a stakeholders forum in Lagos, the Technical Director, Consistent Energy Limited, Mr Mohammed Etti, said Nigeria’s export earnings would dip further once Niger Republic starts generating electricity.

He said: “If Nigeria allows Niger Republic to dam River Niger at Fouta Djullion for her own electricity needs, the country would not be able to export electricity to Niger Republic and that would go a long way to reduce Nigeria’s earnings.”

He said the countries which import energy from Nigeria enjoy stable power supply while the country is constantly plunged into darkness.

Nigeria, he said, sells electricity at commercial rates to these other countries, adding that the country is yet to enjoy value proportionate to her efforts.

The Ministry of Power had quoted the Managing Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN), Mr Usman Mohammed, as saying the country exports 80 per cent of her electricity to other countries in West Africa to improve power supply to the sub-region.

He was quoted to have said the issue is inhibiting the growth of the economy, as well as making it difficult for Nigeria to realise her potentials.

Nigeria generates less than 5,000 Mw despite efforts by the Federal Government to grow the sector.

Should we be giving out what we don't have enough in the first place?

It might interest you to know that Nigeria has been the one shouldering the burden of the entire West Africa when we should be focusing on ourselves. Even Ghana's electricity is powered by Nigeria's gas. If something happens to the West African Gas pipeline powered by Nigeria, light drops significantly in Ghana.

The earlier we started redirecting our resources inwards the better for us. When we get it right, then we can start exporting energy again.

As if Nigeria won't make more than that amount of money if Niger Republic dams the Niger River and Nigeria channels the exported electricity back to its economy.

They're already starting to. You guys are just late to the party. Its dumb of them not to honestly. Even Benin Republic could do it then export any excess they have.

Through this project, Niger intends to increase its electricity supply by an additional 130 MW. The Kandadji hydroelectric dam is built on the Niger River, 150 km from Niamey, the country’s capital.

I tire oo, but since Nigeria doesn't want to look for other sources of power, they keep giving excuses that they're selling power to West Africa because of the fear of those countries damming the river niger

It will be better if we switch roles:

Let Niger provide us with electricity while we pay.

WHO CARES ABOUT THE MONEY NIGERIA IS LOOSING FROM THIS ENERGY ISSUES?

Everything said and done, the money will still be wasted in our over bloated high cost of governance with the common man at the receiving end.

Nigeria do not know how to spend money but it is eager to receive big money.

LET NIGERIA BE RESTRUCTURED SO THAT EACH STATES OR REGION WILL GO AND HANDLE ITS OWN STATE OR REGIONS AFFAIRS.

Bro hydro is not the only source that we can use to generate electricity. What happens to coal that we have in enugu and Kogi? What of the gas in all the south south states? Or solar power and wind power which can be harnessed in the north

What Nigeria needs is energy mix and not this over dependence on hydro which is overrated in my own opinion.
