Driving a car can be an expensive business. Regular car maintenance and repairs make it worthwhile to take care of your vehicle in order to avoid unnecessary bills. Car tyres need to be serviced regularly to ensure performance. However, even the best-maintained tyres will wear out over time. Sometimes tyres wear out much faster than expected.

Regardless of whether you recently bought new tyres or want to keep your existing tyres for as long as possible, there are a few things you can do to extend the life of your tyres and ensure road safety.

1.
Check your tyre pressure every month

Driving at low pressure is one of the fastest ways to shorten the life of your tyre, not to mention that it increases fuel consumption. Check the tyre pressure regularly and inflate it according to the recommendations of the respective vehicle manufacturer. This is usually stated on the vehicle door plate or in the operating instructions. Make sure you don't overfill your tyres as this can lead to uneven tread wear and poor traction.

2.
Rotate them regularly

Regardless of whether you notice signs of wear or not, your tyres should be rotated every 5,000 to 10,000 km according to your driving habits. This is because your front and rear tyres perform different tasks. Turning is therefore necessary to compensate for wear and to maximize the life of the tyres.

3.
Align them regularly

Similar to the rotation of the tyres, the alignment of the suspension should be checked every 5,000 to 10,000 km. Correct alignment ensures that your tyres have the best possible contact with the road and do not wander or pull aside when steering. For the same reason, misalignment can lead to increased fuel consumption, uneven tyre wear and more dangerous consequences such as difficulties in controlling the car. As a best practice, plan that your tyres are aligned every second oil change that occurs approximately every 6,000 km.

4.
Avoid curbs at all costs

The next time you're tempted to drive over a curb to get onto the turning lane faster, remember that this is a bad idea. Every time you hit the curb, you damage your tyres and increase the likelihood that the tyre flanks will break. Avoid driving onto curbs by being aware of the spatial conditions at all times and parking carefully with your mirrors.

5.
Watch out for road hazards

Hitting brake thresholds and potholes, driving too fast, braking too early and driving on rough roads can damage both the tyre sidewall and the tyre pressure. Even though these dangers are sometimes inevitable, you should look ahead and explore any roadworks so you can plan an alternative route. If you have to drive over a pothole or a speed bump, slow it down as much as possible to minimize the risk of damage.
