To me, 0 means nothing. The proper figure starts from 1-10.
Re: Is 2020 Really The Beginning Of A New Decade? by wwwihy: 1:28pm On Jan 01, 2020
Do you count your age 1 the day you were born, is it not after year 1.

Is it the day you start business you commemorate one year anniversary? You don't count 1 from the beginning but zero

For age, you count from zero o, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 8,9 =1 0 years

It is o to 9= 10

Not 1 to 10 =10

Both are correct.
2010 - 2019 (Decade)
2011 - 2020 (Decade)

There is no formal or legal rule to this effect.

The first is the correct one... For age, you don't count from 1 but zero.

It is not the day you were born, you became 1 year old but a year after.

Yes it is.

How we count dates is quite different from how we count objects or things. You count objects by counting from one. Not so with dates.

For instance, a baby begins their first year on earth the day they are born. The day they clock 1 year old, they have already spent one year on earth and immediately they begin the 2nd year.

Similarly, by clocking 2020 today, we have already spent 2020 years. Today the 2021st year began.

So, indeed, a new decade has begun.

Yeah, you can argue that the anno domini era begins with year 1 on the Gregorian calendar.

But, does anyone REALLY consider 1990 as part of the 80s decade?

We are calling 2020 the start of a new decade.
Which begins January 1st 2020 and ends on December 31st 2029.

From all of us @ : Happy New Year 2020.

Issa new decade already!
I go with this opinion. A new decade Yea!

we start counting from 1 to 10. and from 1 to 10 has ten numbers

so it should be 2021 to 2030

Is there anything like 0year?
Re: Is 2020 Really The Beginning Of A New Decade? by TheGreyKnight(m): 2:23pm On Jan 01, 2020
The Calendar the world uses has no Year Zero between 1BC and 1AD.
Normally, counting should start from zero. But our historical numbering omitted it. So, we started counting from Year 1.
1 AD to 10 AD = First Decade (10 Years)
11 AD to 20 AD= Second Decade (10 Years)

2020 is the end of the decade. 2021 starts the next one.
The millennium actually started 2001. This was also argued then.

Despite this, it is allowed to say we've started a new decade. But going by the numbering, we haven't.

Does a new day begin at 12am or 1am ? There you have your answer .

January 1 1990 to December 31 1999 is the 90s
January 1 2000 to December 31 2009 is the 2000s
January 1 2010 to December 31 2019 is the 2010s
January 1 2020 to December 31 2029 is the 2020s

but yea this is also correct in the grand scheme of things

Your are wrong.

The first decade started from January 1 0001 A.D to December 31, 0010.A.D 10 full Years.
The current decade started from January 1 2011 A.D to December 31, 2020 A.D 10 full Years

Therefore,2020 marks the end of a decade, while 2021 marks the beginning of another.

Your analysis suggest that the first decade started from January 0000A.D to December 0001 A.D !!!!!!!

Thee was nothing like January 1, 0000AD!!!!!

The beginning of every count, counts!
Re: Is 2020 Really The Beginning Of A New Decade? by lokzie: 2:39pm On Jan 01, 2020
I know it’s a little tricky, but you just have to think about it. We are in the 21st century even though we haven’t hit the year 2100. A child born today is in its first year on earth until it turns 1 year old and begins their second year. At the start of every decade, the first year always ends with a 0 and the 10th year ends with a 9. There are only 10 digits from which all numbers are formed, 0 being the first and 9 being the tenth.
In University, on your Matric day, you say you are in first year, even though you’ve probably only been on campus for a few days. When registering for 2nd year classes, you say you are in Year 2, but you have really only completed a full calendar year (forget ASUU and the usual Naija public school drama), same logic applies. 2020 is the first year in the twenties decade.
One example of where binary place holders are applicable in every day life.
heyjay:
Happy new year and welcome to 2020. But is it the start of a new decade? Opinions are divided on this matter, as many believe a decade counts from 1 to 10, since the Gregorian calendar has no year zero.

Proponents of a new decade believe we count decades from zero to nine. For instance, Andrew Novick, a scientist at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology tweets that "You wouldn't say that someone born in 1970 was from the sixties, would you?" So 60s as a decade mean a between 1960 and 1969.

Others in the middle believe that the argument is not necessary since a decade is simply "a period of 10 years". Which side of the divide are you? Is it #NewDecadeNewMe or just #HappyNewYear2020?

Dumbness everywhere. A decade is 10 years. It can start from anytime and end 10 years after.

If we are talking in terms of decades after the 'AD' there was no year starting in 0. Here's an article that will shed more light on it.

Nah..
if a baby Is born we start counting from secs, minutes, hours, months before the baby gets to a year.......

2020 is the beginning of a decade ..

.we are already 2020 years, 12 hours 18 minutes and some seconds up. .. of existence

Yeah, same way the years....look at it, when a first is born, it's in it's first year already, it just started counting down. It completing the 1 year means it's done with a year. So actually counting starts from 1. That also counts for the years.
I don't know if you understand what I'm trying to pass across
u are very intelligent but we start counting from 0's
1990 to 1999
2000 to 2009
2010 to 2019
2020 to 2029

Vision 2020 is not the year 2020 but from 2020 to 2029 make up to 2020's
Just like the 1990's is from 1990 to

It's vision 2020:20, which means ,Nigeria being the 20th largest economy by year 2020.

I think the question is "where did we get it wrong" because if we have been maintaining the counting from 1 to 10 and from 11 to 20 it will not be confusing. In my opinion this decade started 2011 and it will end 2020.
