Huawei will now use TomTom Maps as an alternative to Google Maps on its smartphones. This comes in the wake of the ban placed on the company by the United States. The ban makes the Chinese giant unable to do business with American companies, including Google.

Already, we are expecting the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro to launch in March without Google Mobile Services. So, apparently, the devices will use TomTom Maps instead of Google Maps.



The ban did not stop Huawei from selling an exorbitant number of smartphones in 2019. In fact, the company sold over 240 million units last year. That is 34 million units more than 2018’s 206 million units. A recent report has it that Huawei has sold up to 12 million units of the Mate 30 worldwide, even though the device lacks Google Mobile Services and Google applications. Much of this success can be attributed to the Chinese market.

However, going forward, solutions are clearly needed for the future. Asides from developing its own operating system to replace Android, Huawei also has to find suitable replacements for Google apps. One of these is Google Maps, and Huawei has chosen to use TomTom Maps now.

Huawei’s choice of TomTom is actually excellent. The company is well-known for satellite navigation, being a pioneer of mapping before the era of smartphones.

We can only wait to see if TomTom Maps will be a worthy replacement for Google Maps in upcoming Huawei phones.

Nice one huawei, bring the tomtom.. Abi no be map again? We would lick it until we get used to it! The U.S should look ck for another indirect motivation for huawei that would push them forward. They've got the 5G. They're making the OS. Tomorrow, they would embark on project zeta.

Did US right really think google is perfect and we won't survive without it? I love this competition, room for improvement

lots of people are even trying to avoid google because its monitors your life and doesn't let you enjoy your privacy, it is a service the American uses in investigating people, google knows the content of your email, they have your phone book if you are using android, gmail, they have your photos and recorded calls if you are using what'sapp, even know your house if you are using uber or google map.
