The federal government is said to embark on a total reconstruction of the Port Harcout to Maiduguri rail line.

The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi revealed this on Tuesday in a series of tweets.

The Minister also said that president Muhammadu Buhari has approved the construction of two additional seaports; one in Bonny, Rivers state and another in Warri, Delta State.

“We are discussing Port Harcourt to Maiduguri rail line. We will construct it. We will start the total reconstruction of that rail corridor. The President has assured me of this and announcement on the project will be made soon. We even added an Industrial park to the design!” Amaechi tweeted.

“The president has also approved the construction of two new seaports. One in Bonny, Rivers state, the other in Warri, Delta State. At the Lekki deep seaport, construction work is ongoing,” he added.

One thing I like about Amaechi and all other ministers making up Buhari's cabinet is that they don't believe in Audio implementation.
When once they profess to execute a project they'll execute it perfectly to completion.
God give them more grease to their elbows as they work together towards the development and progress of the Nation.

The country is finished.

The project itself isn't bad but the timing is completely wrong. There's just no economic activity to sustain it optimally. It will be a subsidy guzzling elephant with no comparison return for the economy.

This is part of what the $20bn to be borrowed is being wasted on.

I have to disagree with you here. Massive Public infrastructure construction is one of the best ways to stimulate economic development. Amidst other little things, it is the major factor for the massive economic growth of China in the last 30 years

It's why you have so called 'ghost cities' everywhere in the country. It brought China from a backwater economy to the number one in terms of GDP PPP (which is a better indicator of economic health than nominal GDP imo) and that makes you wonder why African countries aren't doing more infrastructural spending if they are truly serious about growth.

Lol how long do you guys boko haram will be active? If the narrow guage line takes years to complete like standard guage the government has time to defeat them. The narrow guage line should be rebuilt for commercial purposes.

Do the terrorists want to abandon their positions in Borno when they're close to capturing the last bridge to isolate the capital? The train might actually weaken their siege on the city. There's only one safe road to the city city. Their next target after blowing up Benishek bridge would ne to bombard the airport since it would be the only way to get goods.

Since 2014, soldiers and the police have battled to prevent Boko Haram from attacking the Benishek Bridge which is the only bridge on the 135km-long road linking Maiduguri and Damaturu. Benishek is the headquarters of Kaga local government area of Borno state.

The military and residents feared that should the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road fall under the control of Boko Haram, the insurgents would have effectively won the war because the Borno State capital would have been practically cut off from all access by land.

The ports in Onne and Warri are moribund and you wanna construct a whole new ones?

NPA and shipping associations are complaining of shallowness of existing seaports, high taxes, security challenges, yet you wanna leave those challenges unaddressed and build new seaports?

And una talk say this people get sense?

Don't get carried away with China's public spending.

Anyway, china's public spending was not in isolation of fast rapid growth.

Also, public spending was in the past playing in a minor role in China's growth. It is now playing a much larger role due to China's slowing economy and runaway debt mountain.

Anyway, my point remains economic growth was already fast. It wasn't public spending that made it fast.

Pump priming only makes sense when growth is either very weak or in reverse and when inflation is either very low or there's deflation. In Nigeria, inflation is in double digits and so does not fit in.

In addition, it is only used for a short while to drive growth until other growth drivers tick in. Buhari has been using it since 2016 or 2017 and yet, growth is still mediocre.

A country very dependent on public spending to spur growth is indicative of serious undermining economic problems. You can't borrow massive amounts forever, you'll go bankrupt. Already, over 70% of government revenue is spent servicing debt. By 2023, it is estimated to hit 95%. If this isn't preposterous, then abominable will be fitting.

These approvals aren't new. When do you plan on adding them to ICRC list? Lekki, Ibom are currently there. Even the narrow guage rails are there but you haven't done anything after G.E pulled and Transfered deal Transnet.

I still have to disagree with your point undermining the effect of public infrastructure spending in economic development.

China's sustained high economic growth and increased competitiveness in manufacturing has been underpinned by a massive development of physical infrastructure.

Ofcourse, labour force and private investments have played some roles, economists around the world have concluded that the one and most important factor in China's economy soaring to the top in the last decade has been their massive investment in public Infrastructure.

Ofcourse, a goverment can't focus on only this but it should be at the very very top of the list.

Here is a research paper on China's concentration on infrastructure in case you are interested

Because the oil money they would use would come from katsina or the increased VAT taxes is being paid by ogun state alone.

There is actually a method to the seeming madness: new seaports mean lots of new government capital expenditure, which means lots of new opportunities for big, juicy kickbacks to the offshore accounts of politicians. You can be sure that a minor constellation of orbiters around Amaechi are salivating at the prospect, regardless of how little sense any of it might make for Nigeria in the long term. It's no accident that over the decades, Nigerian politicians have consistently chosen to throw huge sums at big infrastructure projects rather than at addressing the tremendous human-capital deficit that is at root of so many of the country's problems (including the masses' instinctive resort to tribalism as a substitute for critical thinking).
