I don't believe for one second that buses are more effective in a densely populated area than rail. That's just ridiculous. That said, I think rail and busing are equally important. There's a reason China drops rail and buses everywhere.

There's only two reasons a government fights rail and good public transportation: industry greed for car revenue, and upper classes wanting to limit the travel/lifestyle of lower classes. There's other factors, but it all boils down to good public transportation taking money from the few and allowing it to circulate among the many as well as stay in people's hands. It's purely an oppressive action. It's sad that a terrible, communist country like China is more progressive in this area than better places. It just shows how stupid, evil, and greedy some people are.

It's not even just about the economy. It's about culture and quality of life. Europe transportation is a perfect example of its benefits. The average person enjoys a lifestyle and can gift their children things most people only dream of in other (developed) nations.
