A study by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) put the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria to 13.5 million – as of 2018. An unimpressive mass of this number comes from Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, and other northern states.

In December 2019, Jigawa state government announced it would open a bidding process for the construction of 95 mosques across the state. This is a state with over 800,000 out-of-school children,

According to a survey by the Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN), there are more than 800,000 out-of-school children between the age of three and 18 in Jigawa.

In Kano, there are about one million out-of-school children in the state. This is according to Peter Hawkins, the UNICEF representative to Nigeria, who disclosed this at a four-day workshop organised for commissioners and permanent secretaries from the 19 northern states in August 2019.

In Katsina, there are approximately one million out-of-school children. Though, Aminu Masari, the governor of the state, put the number at 996,000. Ditto Zamfara.

In addition, reports by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA) reveal that the north-west region has the highest number of drug-related arrests in years, with 2,205 arrests in 2015 alone. A motion on drug abuse in the north adopted by the senate in 2017 disclosed that three million bottles of codeine were consumed by drug abusers daily in Kano and Jigawa.

Also, Mojisola Adeyeye, director-general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), revealed that 70 percent of the youth essentially, the young boys, abuse illicit drugs in Kano.

When you put all these numbers together what you have is chaos, banditry and kidnapping.

In June, 2019, the federal government said it was considering proscribing the Al-majiri system of education in order to tackle insecurity.

Babagana Monguno, national security adviser, who disclosed this at the end of the national executive council meeting in Abuja, said the ban is to ensure that no child is deprived of basic education.

He said Almajiris were becoming a prodigious problem to society, and that many of them end up becoming “criminals, drug addicts and willing tools in the hands of those who have very dangerous intentions’’.

This is what we ought to be fighting for.

Unfortunately, it is the state that funds education but these exploiters are funding mosques with government money instead and creating what many call Fulani terrorists instead of calling them 'uneducated exploited Nigerians' that they actually are and solving the problem through education.

Thankfully, time is one great educator, especially in this technology era. It's just unfortunate that it will take us longer than if we directly educated them, which is not easy when some terrorise with boko haram.

Hopefully, we'd recognise the cause and apply the right remedy, in time.

We ewedu muslims believe that UNICEF is a branch of IPOB. They just want to paint our great fulani master race as bad people. But we must defend them. Insha Allah!

The mosques are not the reason. The stupid politician.who spends government money building mosques instead of schools is the problem.

If government built churches in the south instead of schools, we might burn them down! (Though, honestly speaking, they just about do already in a very underhanded way.)

The northern masses needs southerners to rule them. Their elites attitude to power is like the dog that chases a car for 2 miles, when it eventually catches the car, it doesn't know what to do with it.

You burn wetin.Oh please sad
Didn't a state spend close to a billion naira on a Xmas tree? Why you no use am for firewood
I've read many times were different governors spends some hefty sum building churches, and that comes with applauses not condemnation
If the politicians can't use 99% of the states revenue to solve the chronic education issue in their states, then is it the 1% that may have gone into Islamic causes that would do so

Did you miss where I said, "Though, honestly speaking, they just about do already in a very underhanded way"?

You must mention government sponsorship of pilgrims to Israel and donations to pastor to pray to win election. It's all underhanded building of church with government money, and its not on.

Because the mosques takes up the time where they could other wise be really studying things that will be of benefit.

It isnt churches or mosques that we need in our country, you know that, i know that, and everyone out there knows.

Divert all the funds to building technical and profrofessional institutions.

Build anything other than a foreign religious structure and you and all your loved ones instantly begin experiencing progress

You need deliverance! Are any of the issues identified here worth celebrating? Or do your imams in the mosques preach and encourage continued abuse of drugs and discontinuation of schooling so that we can understand why all you picked out of this write up is 'mosque'?

Does it seem right and proper to you that a state with such a high number of out-of-school children will rather find the construction of mosques instead of directing such funds to addressing the endemic problem of illiteracy? Why should public funds be expended on religion that is a personal affair/right?
