- Osinbajo's long walk to place Nigeria among the best.

When Nigeria's Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN launched the tech hub, known as Vibranium Valley, in Lagos, he declared in a keynote address that Nigeria’s future would be based on technology.

Nigeria’s young population have strong entrepreneurial and risk taking culture, evident in the growing number of innovative companies leveraging technology to solve locally relevant problems.

Osinbajo made it known that the government is taking the phenomenon seriously, as demonstrated by the innovation hub plans and ease of doing business initiative.

The Vibranium valley houses thirty (30) tech companies and has the capacity to house fifty (50) more. This is one of the many investments the government is attracting to the country through its favorable policies.

In the last four years, Nigerian Tech entrepreneurs have raised millions of dollars in investment, through the government's willingness to attract more investors, bringing acceptability to Nigerian products and services.

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo had inaugurated the Advisory Group on Technology and Creativity, established by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2017, as part of an effort to boost industrial policies and competitiveness for the country.

The committee has a good number of private sector members with professional roots in technology operations.

These tech firms however can't attain optimum performance without stable power supply. Osinbajo as Acting President directed the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to intervene and ensure that the Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia States, enjoys 24 hours supply of electric power. The city of Aba is noted as a tech hub and centre for commercial activities, while the Ariaria Market is one of the most popular markets in the southern part of the country.

The directive gave birth to the Energizing Economies Initiative, which has been inaugurated at various markets across the nation, to support the rapid deployment of off-grid electricity solutions to MSME's in economic clusters.

After the Vice President's visit to Silicon Valley in the United States of America, there has been an increased interest in the continent and during the his visit he met with investors and CEOs who are turning up to invest in the country's tech space.

These include Microsoft which has opened an engineering office in Nigeria, Google has also commenced an accelerator program. IBM has launched the Digital Nation Africa project, Chinese billionaire Jack Ma has visited Nigeria and is working on an Africa wide investment project. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter was just here in Lagos, as part of his Africa tour in November 2019. These global tech brands have seen the wisdom of tapping into Nigeria tech at the early stages.

Lagos State, which is one of Africa’s largest markets, with GDP of over $136 billion and significant young population, has largely accommodated the growth of technology hubs and has attracted global attention with recent visits by CEOs of Google, Facebook, Microsoft, ensuring significant growth in number of Nigerian startups accepted into global accelerators.

Also, FinTech with significant Nigerian operations is raising major funding, like Cellulant raised $47.5 million.

Lagos startups are also building to serve the entire African market, with high quality and relatively lower cost talent. Startups like Andela, NESA, and Data Science Nigeria are training developers and Data Scientists. Strong community and support system through incubators, accelerators & dev communities have kept the buzz going strong.

Nigeria has recorded significant progress made in recent years as local and international Venture Capital funds reached over $100 million invested in 2017.

Over $100 million has been raised from Venture Capital investors by Nigerian startups in recent times.

Over $40 million was raised each by Flutterwave and Andela, and SureRemit recently raised $7 million in an ICO.

Several global technology leaders have launched initiatives aimed at Nigeria, including:
Google Launchpad for Nigeria, the first ever Launchpad outside San Francisco. Facebook also launched physical hub space in Lagos State.

Also in the E-Commerce sector, Jumia has emerged as Africa’s first tech unicorn acquiring over 1 million customers. Other Innovative players creating new channels in entertainment and media consumption such as Adtech, players like Twinpine which has created a mobile ad network for Africa leveraging telco data.
IrokoTV is the largest distributor of Nollywood content globally.

Players are digitizing an offline healthcare industry and increasing access to healthcare for the mass market e.g. Lifebank, which recently raised $1m to help hospitals better access blood & other health supplies.

Companies leveraging technology to serve small holder farmers and increase funding for agriculture, e.g. FarmCrowdy has raised over $1 million to build a crowd-funding platform for agriculture and bring Nigeria’s farmers online.

Startups solving the problem of easing access to physical goods in Nigeria leveraging tech solutions, like Kobo360 has built the ‘Uber for trucks’- matching truck drivers to companies who need their services, and recently raised $1.2M from Western Technology Investment.

Online and mobile money payment processors and gateways facilitating web payment through different payment methods (card, bank accounts etc.), Flutterwave processed over $1.2 billion in transactions in 1 year;
Paga has acquired 8 million customers since inception.

Several startups leveraging alternative data sources and data science to lend to the underbanked, like Paylater issuing over 1,000 loans daily with 5-minute disbursements.

Other tech firms are leveraging web payment channels to create alternative automated savings products, a typical example is Piggybank who grew deposits over 3000% in 2017 alone.

The Nigeria Tech story has changed significantly and the federal government policy is working almost perfectly in this direction.

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, deserves a huge applaud for the passion and dedication with which he sells the Nigerian tech dream to the world, at every opportunity he gets to speak in events.

Did you see the bit where it says "solving local relevant problems"?

When life gives lemons to the strong, risk taking, innovative, entrepreneurial hard working growing youths, they make lemonade and sell it for huge profits.

lemon and restriction are two different things, we try nuclear power then our sanction would keep flying in same as coal.. yet we need power and they restrict us to thermal wind hydro and solar, yet northern africans ans white south africans get that privelege

level playing ground Nigeria would be so great they are scared

No one is restricting us but ourselves!

If we had the knowledge to create nuclear energy, we would create nuclear energy, but at the moment, we do not even have enough knowledge to buy nuclear energy, not to talk of create nuclear energy!

But if you doubt this, just see how much use we have made of the vast amount of sun energy that we are not bothering to use. Or go find out what we do with our vast amounts of gas energy.

We restrict ourselves with our own ignorance!

International Atomic Energy Agency issues who can and who cant have reactors, many Nigerian pysicist are vast in nuclear technology, but we are restricted, same as nonsense Paris Agreement on coal

the problem is simple, all nuclear fission reaction from uranium fuel gives plutonium and other isotope of uranium that are used in nuclear fission weapon device so western countries wouldnt allow it

or why do you think Iran is constantly been shut down

Gbamsolutely.

The wailing clowns are all over the social media insulting Buhari for their failures in life. The clowns are expecting buhari to start crediting their accounts with millions.

Funny enough, they aren't even educated enough to point out the areas where the govt has actually failed. I have seen some few criticisms which are spot on, but the issue is that, those critics are not even wailers but very neutral individuals.

All a typical wailing idiot does is to wake up in the morning and start going from door to door telling everyone how Buhari has made things difficult for them. Ask them to explain, they insult you down to your forefathers.

We may have Nigerian physicist who are vast in nuclear technology, but we are not yet knowledgeable as a nation to create it.

International Atomic Energy Agency does not restrict nuclear technology if used for energy generation! They restrict you blowing yourselves and others up though, which you may easily do if you do not know what you are doing.

And coal is a very inefficient means of creating energy. Besides, we have gas. See below what we currently do with it.

Even if nothing kicks your thinking faculty into gear, the name vibranium valley should. The more start ups congregate and begin to take advantage of the economies of scale, then progress can be quantified in leaps and bounds.
VP Osinbajo would surely not relent until we aren't quantifying the finished products but rather qualifying it
