I read a post from someone that said "Religion is the worst thing that happened to humanity". I thought about it for a while and decided to write something about it. First lets consider some facts.
1) It is a fact that Terrorism in our world today is birthed from Religious believes, primarily Islamic religious believes such as we see in Islamic terror groups all around the world who from their religious conviction believe that killing unbelievers and even dying in the process is a service unto God. The same terrorist believe that such act will guarantee them a paradise of reward and endless sexual pleasures. This has led to them perpetrating unimaginable evil as never seen before which is a global source of concern and worry. Of course not all Muslims share in their believe and conviction as we have peace loving Muslims all around the world.
2) It is also true that poverty in some part of the world is birthed by lazy religious folks who fail to work, who do nothing but pray believing that such prayers will win them some mysterious wealth and prosperity that they have not worked for. This believe accompanied by their inaction has hindered their productivity and the resultant prosperity that such productivity will bring.
But despite the above considerations and others, I don't agree that Religion is man's problem. Religion is in fact the best thing that has happened to humanity.
False religion or a true religion that has been abused is what is giving the world problems.
The believe in a Loving God who reward those who do good and punish those who do evil, and the believe in life after death where all the good done in life will be rewarded and all the wrongs done in life will be punished is the root of all morality and humanity. The believe that there is a God in heaven watching all we do and keeping into record all our good and bad deeds is what is restraining the depth of evil in so many people. Imagine a world where no one believes in life after death, a world where no one believes in a God who rewards good and punishes evil, a world where every one believes that once a man dies, that is the end of him. His consciousness and existence ceases and his good or bad deeds will not be accounted for after death. In such a world, by implication it will mean the only good a man can enjoy is the one he gets while still alive. Imagine how such a world will be! What motive will there be for sanity and decorum in such a world? What motive will there be for doing good, telling the truth, defrauding no one, cheating no one and so on in order to enhance one's own happiness and prosperity? It will be unimaginable.
Some people may reason that, you can be good for the single purpose of keeping a good name for yourself when you die. But what good is a good name or a good legacy to a death man who ceases to exist after life? What pleasure does a good name bring to a man who dies and doesn't exist anywhere to enjoy the glory of the good name?
It therefore will mean everyone will do what they must to get all the good there is in life because that is all there is to gain. Any means to get wealthy and prosper and get happiness for yourself weather it be to sacrifice the happiness of others to promote yours will be embraced. Such a world will be unimaginable.
We may appeal to the conscience of every man and the humanity in every man to be the motivation for good in such a world. But it is the knowledge of right and wrong which is rooted in the believe in God that gives humanity her conscience. It is the believe in some mysterious punishment for wrong, and the same mysterious reward for good weather in the short run or the long run that gives humanity her conscience. Remove this and there will be no conscience to condemn wrong doers. Life in the world will be like life in the wild where it is continually the battle for survival and invariably the survival of the fittest and strongest. By strongest, it will entail those who are physically stronger, psychologically stronger, emotionally stronger and so on. It will be the survival of those who can more successfully deceive and lie to promote their interest, kill others who stand in the way of their happiness and a strive to get the most happiness in life and live as long as one can to get all the happiness one can get. There will be no standard for right and wrong and even if such a standard exist, there will be no conscience to appeal to the maintaining of such a standard. And even if there is a government to enforce the standard, anyone can quickly fall on the evil they can do that the government cannot see or dictate. Religion is the greatest blessing that has happened to the world, conferring humanity and morality to mankind and restraining the depth of evil and wickedness in man. The knowledge and fear of God birthed even the morality and humanity uphold by many nations of the world. Without the knowledge and fear of God, such standard will not have existed. Man will live in utter depravity and wickedness without the slightest regard for his neighbour. False religion or perverted religion is what brings headache and heart ache to humanity such as is witnessed in Islamic terrorist bodies and lazy religious folks. But if true Religion is embraced in its truest form, the world will be the best it can ever be. True Religion which Teaches love and consideration for one's neighbour, which teaches selflessness, which Teaches patriotism and obedience, which Teaches hard work and transparency, Which teaches truth and honesty. When such a religion is embraced by any nation, such a nation will be a heaven on earth.
