Kill DPR director, council boss’s brother

Joe Ogbodu, Warri

PALPABLE fears have gripped Warri residents over the spate of killings in the commercial nerve centre of Delta State.
This was sequel to the alleged killing of an Assistant Director with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in the Warri office.
The deceased, identified as Adedeji Ahmed Adetulubo, was allegedly killed by unknown gunmen on Tuesday.
It was also gathered that suspected gunmen on Monday killed the brother of the chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Peter Abugewa.
The victim, simply identified as Victor, was reportedly shot dead by yet-to-be identified gunmen.
The Nigerian Compass gathered that the DPR director was shot dead at Okiti Street by Giwa Amu junction about 7.15 p.m., while returning to his NNPC Senior Staff Quarters located at Ekpan area of Effurun, near Warri.
It was learnt that Adetulubo was driving home in his Toyota Avalon car with registration number Lagos PA 58 AAA, when he was stopped by four armed youths.
Said a security source: “We learnt that the hoodlums demanded for the car key and while he was trying to comply, another one shot him. They ensured that he could not escape death before they left the scene. His vehicle was not stolen giving the impression that it was a case of assassination.”
It was further learnt that a policeman who overheard the conversation between the victim and the hoodlums from his room later rushed out and made frantic effort to save the deceased.
“The policeman pulled the body of the gasping victim into his abandoned car and took him to the hospital but unfortunately, he died on the way. We learnt that the victim was a gentle man who could not hurt a fly,” added the source.
It was learnt yesterday that the victim was responsible for the supervision of lifting of crude oil at Forcados and other major oil terminals, as well as executing very sensitive assignments for the DPR, a subsidiary of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) in Warri office.
State police spokesman, Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP), yesterday confirmed the incident, saying that investigation has been launched.
Consequently, a socio-political pressure group, “Ogaga Isoko Club” has decried the spate of assassinations and kidnappings in the state and blamed the recent high crime wave on the lukewarm attitude on the state government and security agencies.
In a statement yesterday shortly after its meeting in Warri, the Publicity Secretary of the group, Chief Joe Emakaili said “lives and properties are no more safe as people live in fear everyday in the state. The function of the government is to preserve lives and properties, like in Rivers State where Governor Rotimi Amaechi confronted kidnappers one on one and has succeeded in chasing them out.
“We wonder why the Delta State Government is silent over this issue or are they and the state police command working hand in gloves with the kidnappers? They should do something drastically to stem this vice before damage is done to innocent citizens of the state.
