This is a common problem with many countries around the world...not just Nigeria, US and Japan.

Infact, I recall watching a CNN report on the matter regarding UN and other diplomats in the US racking up similar debts in the city of New York alone....back in 1997.

Most of the debt goes way back. And because of soemthing called diplomatic immunity, many countries don't pay.

And no, it does not make Buhari a good leader.

Thanks for the apt response.

People like chrisxxx think abusing Nigeria all day long and calling it a shithole would make Trump give them visas or improve Nigeria's economy.

stop comparing Nigeria to 1st world countries.

What has being 1st world countries got to do with the fact that they also owe? How does it make them different from other debtors?

Well... you are wasting your time on folks with microscopic IQs.

No matter how long you explain your post to them, they wouldn't understand.

They are programmed to chant "shithole ", "zoo", " i regret being a Nigerian"

See how organized country Dey make money from people, o boy drive personal car and pay, so u see why those abroad they humble, apply it here in naija our polician they move around with so many empty cars no go gree
Yep, abroad civility comes with being in an organised environment.

Roads and public transport system are well maintained. Nobody gives a toss if you ride a big car or not. Na you go buy petrol and pay road tax tire.
All those 9ja gra-gra and show off have no place where civility has taken root long ago.

It is new money people like in Dubai where such show off still counts.

Good! UK and tax systems.

Nigerians go abroad and enjoy the good things that the countries oversea offers like good health care, good road network and well maintained lawn and environment.
Imagine what the city of London makes from this congestion tax. UK has a lot of taxes people pay which goes a long way in making the city and environment habitable.

My host in Houston got a demand notice from Houston city council to pay $23 for allowing his grasses in front of his house to overgrow above certain height. These fines and levies are channeled towards city management.

If you introduce such in Nigeria, people will protest and riot yet the expect the best of standard of living.

This is how proper countries raise income, transparently and without the need for bribes.

This money not only cuts pollution but helps to fund the London transport network, which is incredible. Buses, trains, metro, river boats...n there is not one part of that city not covered by it. No excuse for these thieves to waste our money on chauffeur driven cars everywhere.

United States accumulated a total of 102,255 unpaid congestion charges, which add up to £12.44m, adding that the Embassy of Japan had a total of 69,690 unpaid congestion charges, which add up to £8,510,650. If the US and Japanese pay. Nigeria will pay too. UK are ripping off other countries since 1764.

Those two countries above us can pay their debts easily. Moreso I'm sure they incurred that with the maximum benefits to their respective countries. Why, I can't say that though to the one incurred by Nigeria :/!

shocked shocked shocked shocked

No wonder lawn mowers are big business in the US.

And you are right about the taxes thing. If we bring in things like council taxes, TV licences, higher power bills, and so on, people will complain that they are poor and that they cannot pay

And then they turn around and expect to be like the US and Europe with the tiny amount of money we have.

Re: Nigerian High Commission Owes United Kingdom Government N3.3bn Traffic Fee - UK by Litmus: 1:17pm On Feb 26, 2020
I'm increasingly convinced that the insults rained down on Nigeria are a sort of economic sabotage by those paid to demonize Nigeria in order to divert all tourist traffic and as much FDI traffic away from Nigeria to another West African country as possible. And all local Nigerians shouldn't put up with it in the mistaken belief that those criticing Nigeria do so for political reasons or bitterness because they want better for Nigeria.

See "patriotic" Nigerians making silly excuses for such wastage and frivolity.

"USA and Japan incurred packing costs too." shame!

First, when you compare the amount, efficiency of consular and diplomatic services USA and Japan give their respective countries, it becomes fair to overlook such fines.

But what excuse does Nigeria diplomats have to give to accumulate parking fees as much as USA and Japan who have embassies and programs 10 times bigger than Nigeria embassy?

If we must survive, we must learn to do the right things and shun partisan politics in crucial issues.

Crap. USA owes 12.5 million pounds, they should efficiently pay that. They are supposed world leading Nation, they should pay parking fees and set the standards on how responsible nations should act. Nigeria is a young nation.

The UK is a principled society. Everyone that chose to have an embassy there was and is aware if the terms and conditions. Nigeria is an independent country and ought to meet its obligations on its own terms not dependent on other countries; the government can also explore negotiation opportunities for any possible concession. You zombies should stop acting as if the world owes you any favours! A country that has zero regard for its citizens with a president neck-deep in nepotism and corruption will be expecting special treatment from other serious countries for what and how? Body language? Rubbish!
