Helpful tips, not this fearmongering: The Link Between Plastics and Cancer Many people work hard to reduce their cancer risk by eating healthy foods and exercising regularly, but how many of us consider the effect that using plastic bottles and containers may have on our health? The good news is that many plastic products do not cause an increased cancer risk. There are some plastics that do pose a danger though, so knowing the difference is important to identify possible cancer causes. Cancer Prevention: Know the Good Numbers All plastics are not the same, so it's crucial to determine the type of products you're using by looking at the recycle code number found on the bottom of the item. "There are seven different recycling symbols for plastics," explains Alan Greene, MD, an attending pediatrician at Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., author of Raising Baby Green and founder of www.drgreene.com. "The first six are for specific kinds of plastic and the last one, [No.] 7, is ‘other' - all the other recyclable plastics lumped together in a grab bag." The "good" numbers to look for are 1, 2, 4, and 5. No. 1 is PET, or polyethylene, and is generally used to make single serving plastic water bottles among other products. Some people may worry about the safety of these water bottles in terms of cancer risk, but these concerns are generally unfounded. "PET is the stuff used in most single use water bottles and if you use it [once] and if you're not overheating it, it's probably pretty safe and there aren't any health issues known with it," says Dr. Greene, "However, if you were to microwave in it or potentially even leave it in the sun for a long time or re-use it multiple times so that the chemicals started leaching out, it could be problematic. But [if used] as intended, it's a pretty safe product." No. 2 plastic is high density polyethylene. This type of plastic is often milky colored and used in milk jugs, water jugs, and shampoo bottles. No. 4 is low density polyethylene and is found in many grocery store bags, plastic wraps, and cling wraps. Polypropylene, No. 5, is used to make yogurt containers, straws, and healthier baby bottles, among other items. Avoiding Cancer Causes: Know the Bad Numbers, Too Avoiding these numbers to cut cancer risk can be equally important. No. 3, polyvinyl chloride, is found in a number of cling wraps and some squeeze bottles. Polystyrene, No. 6, is used in styrofoam trays, cups, and so forth. There are definite health concerns related to this material, especially if it is heated in the microwave or hot liquid is placed in it. The last recycling code to know is No. 7 - this category includes materials that contain chemicals such as bisphenol A, also known as BPA. BPA, which is found in the lining of canned goods and some plastic containers, may increase cancer risk. Make Your Actions Count to Decrease Cancer Risk Besides looking for numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5, there are other smart steps to take to avoid possible cancer causes. "In general it's better to avoid heating foods in plastic containers because even the good ones can release some of the plastic into the food," notes Greene. "Also, you generally want to drink only cold liquids out of plastic containers. I would drink hot tea or hot coffee out of paper or glass cups, or a ceramic mug instead." Storing food should ideally be done using a glass container for optimal safety. Also, be sure to use only a mild detergent when washing plastic containers as harsh detergents can break down the material and cause chemicals to leach into your food later. While we can't entirely reduce our risk of cancer, knowing which plastics to use and which to avoid can help. 3 Likes |

IWTBAB:The more reason this current system can never work because there is too much pretence of unity and love that don't really exist and can never exist because it wasn't favour the political players if they allow it. The best at the moment is to go back to regional arrangements where people with similar language, culture, etc can relate better, generate their income and pay percentage to FG. Then the president will be for all via security against external forces through the military & concern herself with few other national matters, auditing, etc. Until then, I am afraid to say boldly that the country is only moving in circles and will go no where because the current system is against the citizens. |

I don't think it will be wrong to say that everything man has invented has two sides; all his inventions in the long run end up as a threat to his life or as a complete disaster. But, the annoying part is that the same system that promotes it today will stand to preach against it tomorrow; the same channel that says eat this today will tell you abstain from the same tomorrow. Are the educated really educated? Or, are they just sets of semi intelligent organic robots taking instructions from other sources. It baffles me when people defend what they didn't invent, they instruct base on others' experiments. We adopt and use stuffs base on promotion and popularity. Once the f*ckin elites say "it's OK", so be it. But, are they the one talking or they are just bunch of unconscious elevated ignoramus thinking themselves wise because of monitored exposures they called education? Think about these: *Plastics wastes threatening aquatic lifes *Global warming as a result of smoking beasts *Cancerous genetically modified foods *Nuclear activities of tiny benefits *Space exploration with funny prospects *Computer and programming with Artificial Intelligence becoming another source of concern. Who knows what will be declared unsafe for use tomorrow? Lab rats I see, lab rats we are. I don't see an easy way out of these sh*ts but the leading rats will not stop deceiving until the handwriting is clear to all. |
