(Full Text) NNPC Gives Reasons For The Explosion In Abule Ado

The management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has revealed that the explosion which rocked Abule Ado community of Lagos State earlier today, was caused by a truck which struck gas cylinders in the community.

In a statement released by NNPC, it was gathered that the gas cylinders which was hit by the truck were stacked in a gas processing plant located near the corporation’s system 2B Pipeline Right of Way.
The corporation explained that preliminary findings indicated that the impact of the explosion was so huge that it led to the collapse of nearby houses and damage to NNPC pipeline on which efforts are being made to curtail the resultant fire.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari and other top Management of the corporation departed for Lagos this evening for an on-the-spot assessment at the scene of the incident.
The statement reads in full:-
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Sunday said that the reported explosion which rocked Abule Ado Area of Lagos State in the early hours of the day was as a result of gas explosion which occurred after a truck hit some gas cylinders stacked in a gas processing plant located near the corporation’s system 2B Pipeline Right of Way.
In a press release signed by NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr. Kennie Obateru, the corporation explained that preliminary findings indicated that the impact of the explosion was so huge that it led to the collapse of nearby houses and damage to NNPC pipeline on which efforts are being made to curtail the resultant fire.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari and other top Management of the corporation departed to Lagos this evening for an on-the-spot assessment at the scene of the incident.
Obateru stated that following the report of the explosion, the corporation quickly halted ongoing pumping operations on the Atlas Cove-Mosimi pipeline which was active at the time.
The release explained that NNPC had already mobilized its in-house combined team consisting of Health Safety Environment experts, Medical and Security personnel from its nearby Satellite Depot in Lagos, even as Lagos State Fire Service was also rallied to extinguish the fire.
The release said more fire firefighting personnel and equipment were mobillised from the NNPC Mosimi Area Office to provide extra fillip to the ongoing operation.
While assuring members of the public and residents of the affected communities to remain calm, the NNPC’s spokesman assured that the temporary shutdown of the petroleum products pipeline would not affect the normal supply of products to the Lagos and its environs.

the explosion which rocked Abule Ado community of Lagos State earlier today, was caused by a truck which struck gas cylinders in the community.
The emboldened clearly explains the magnitude of the explosion.

Gas explosion na bomb o.

The corporation explained that preliminary findings indicated that the impact of the explosion was so huge that it led to the collapse of nearby houses and damage to NNPC pipeline on which efforts are being made to curtail the resultant fire

NNPC should take responsibility for this without playing any politics.

In the first place, structures whose failure can be this disastrous shouldn't be any where close to residential areas. Where they have been made, it is the responsibility of the corporation to prevent the occupation of such areas. Obviously, it failed in doing that.

Additionally, mechanism should have been emplaced to ensure that on no account should a truck or any vehicle be able to access the area, let alone anywhere close to the pipeline.

Now that NNPC has agreed with the loss, it should swing into action to compensate immediately. Though, lives lost can't be compensated, at least it should be mitigated.

Hope they are planning to get their insurance or at worst the government to take responsibility for the loss of the people by paying collateral damages at the least.

I don't believe this crap. It was one big deep sound of bomb that shook Lagos and other neighbouring states. If they were cylinders, there would be multiple shots and it would have not destroy houses kilometres away by it's vibratio.

Whoever paved that road on the pipeline is a wicked soul. All roads paved on all gas/ pipeline should av been abolished since the event of gas explosion at ijegun some years ago.

Nigeria govt /NNpc need to put a strict safety measures on the pipeline to avoid future recurrence

Nigeria government have zero value for human lives hence their negligence and nonchalant attitude in doing what's right.

these cankerworms knows what's right but they see it as a big deal to do them hence the causalities we keep recording every year in regards to this explosion

I just hope this lost of lives in Nigeria slow down, this is becoming scary and sad

You hateful souls always pray for negative news every time.

Well, Mr Awolu, it was confirmed that it was due to a gas explosion. If you don’t like it, you can pray for a terrorist attack in your state of origin to get a hold on how bombing really looks like.

I don't think it's NNPC fault that lands in that vicinity were sold n houses built on them but the fault of Lagos State government n its agencies. Some house owners there have C of O. How did they get it? Who certified the area for residential? Who approved the buildings n gave them building codes? Certainly not NNPC.

I once wanted to rent an apartment, that I could hear the hissing sound of the power cables of the grid towers. It's still baffles me how people live conveniently in houses that has encroach into right of way of these installations.... My heart goes to many who has experience any loss in this devastating impact
