Seun, I think you need to do more research about this virus and listen to the experts.

First of all, everything is secondary when it comes to human lives. Business, economy etc. Human lives are priceless. We cannot gamble with human lives because we want Nairaland or other companies to grow or not lose money.

The use of face masks, according to experts doesn't stop the spread of the virus effectively. How do you even think government can enforce face masks and social distancing? Do you think we have the manpower to station law enforcement officials at every nook and cranny of the society? In market places, football centres etc, is it realistic to practice social distancing effectively?

The whole purpose of the lockdown is not only to minimize the spread of the virus effectively but also to ensure that the medical centers designated for treatment of the virus wouldn't be overwhelmed. If everyone contacts the virus at the same time, people would be dying en masse because we don't have enough medical centers. Despite the lockdown, it is still spreading at a high rate and the numbers are growing, how much worse will it be with the use of only facemasks and everyone is still going about their normal businesses?

The companies creating these test kits, most of what they're developing is still experimental at best and the results aren't 100% correct. Keep in mind that most of these companies are just trying to make quick profit so it would be unreasonable to patronize their products. Imagine someone uses the kit and is tested wrongly, and therefore doesn't self-isolate, wouldn't it keep spreading through such people to others?

Medical experts and scientists some of whom have spent their entire lives studying about viral diseases, its prevention, containment etc have recommended self-isolation/quarantine/lockdown to most governments. It is better to follow their guidelines. Stop imagining solutions you think will work when in reality more knowledgeable people on the subject say it wouldn't.

We cannot prevent untimely death in its entirety but it is important to try to minimize it as much as possible. Anything that's taking lives in a short period of time with reckless abandon and spreads like wildfire should not be taken lightly and extreme precautions are necessary.

Having said all this, the main question that should be asked is why the government isn't doing more to sustain poor folks at home. Even if the government says that it doesn't have the means to take care of all its poor citizens, many individuals and companies have donated. If the govt asks for help from foreign countries, there will surely be lots of donations, why are they not making the funds available to the common man during this isolation period? The US made funds available to most citizens earning below $75,000. Our daft governors are sharing eba and soup (which will digest in two hours) when there are better avenues like sending money to the accounts of low earners through their BVN. Asking these questions should be your focus, not undermining the recommendations of renowned medical experts.

Seun:

Staying at home helps on the short-term, but it's not sustainable on the long term. Here's an analogy: staying at home prevents car accidents. But you don't see any country asking people to stay at home to reduce the rate of car accidents. Instead what they do is encourage safety measures like wearing seat belts, defensive driving, and not overspeeding, so that we can conduct our businesses without crashing our cars.

In the same way, the government should encourage the wearing of face-masks by everybody, everywhere. They should teach people how to use their face-masks properly to achieve the benefits, just as they are teaching people to wash their hands. They should insist that every home and every business and every bus must enforce the washing of hands before people are allowed to enter it. Violators should be punished reasonably.

So i read on one of the post about some lagosians protesting as a result of hunger due to the lock down by the president.

Some people don't even know what we are in. Countries like US, Russia.... etc, are devising a means to fighting the deadly virus while their citizens stay indoor. Here we are in Nigeria, displaying stupidity.

It is not even like there is a lock down in lagos, because you still see people disobeying the order, you see cars running on the roads, bike riders doing their daily works, and also social distancing is a no no in this country.

Tomorrow someone would wake up and start blaming the president. This presidential work ain't easy, you have to consider many things before making a decision.

Our only hope now is for the scientists to find a cure for this virus, else the rate will keep increasing.

One thing i hate about Nigeria : no unity.

The two week's lock down by the FG is for the good of the country, we all need to endure. Now cases are rising up as a result of the shut down, people who had contracted the virus a week to the shut down are now showing symptoms.

The big question should be, " If the FG hadn't shut down markets, schools, activities...etc, what would Nigeria look like today?"

Only when it comes to football and pandemic ....

Staying at home is not the answer for a country with so much poverty. There is no point in saving ppl from the Coronavirus only for them to die of hunger and malnutrition and increased crime. The lockdown policy is simply unsustainable. It is at best a temporary measure to enable the government to get it’s act together. It is not a long-term strategy.

There is no country that has beaten the Coronavirus just by asking people to stay at home. The countries that are beating the Coronavirus, China and South Korea, both did 2 things:
1) Massive testing of suspected cases and isolation of infected people.
2) Encouraging everybody to wear face-masks in public to dramatically reduce the rate of transmission, because many carriers of the virus have no symptoms and can still spread it

Those are the key things we need to do. Shutting down the economy will rob us of the financial resources that we need to carry out the measures that actually work. If we actually calculate economic losses for each day that Lagos is closed, we would be shocked.

Just as asking people to abstain from sex to prevent AIDS never worked, but urging them to use condoms worked, asking people to stay at home when they are poor, cannot work. Our government doesn't have the resources to feed everyone until the vaccine is ready. What we need is for people to use a condom for their faces when they have to go out. If 80% of us can wear face-masks, the problem is solved.

You don't expect everyone to be smart as you are....
A senator removed his face mask to sneeze,
A guest on national TV was seen chewing his gloves...
What about the"uneducated" ?
Staying at home will do a lot of good to us but my people will always see things from the angle that they are being punished....we can survive this...

Tell them. In Seoul and other parts of South Korea that was what the government did, I am a witness.

Every Korean and everybody you see even at the subway wears a mask. In Nigeria, I learnt they are mocking those wearing face mask cry. For those that arrive the country from any country, they take your data, address and phone number from the airport and continue to track you, sending you sms, calling you everyday to check on you.

Testing increased massively all over the nation.

Nigeria cannot win this war unless the weather and Nigerian people's immune system fight for Nigerians.

If 80% of us can wear face-masks, the problem is solved.

Every single country that have bent the curve used a combination of lockdown, testing and face masks and social distancing rules.
Not just the 2 you listed.

Even China hasn't totally lifted its restrictions despite a massive reduction in new infections.
That is to show that lockdown is very effective from their experience.

On the issue of face mask, it helps to reduce the spread but not totally as evidenced by infected health personnel
and first responders.

And with Nigerians' attitude to government directives, it wouldn't work unless people start dropping dead
on the street and people can sense real fear.
Just like a seat belts, people will use it when near law enforcement but will remove it when none is in sight.

Another point you overlooked is that it is very difficult and expensive to test just 5% of the population
so I am kind of surprised when people talk about massive testing, especially for a developing country.

Currently, about 5000 direct contacts of infected people are said to be missing in Nigeria.
How do you determine who to test or leave alone?

That is where shutdown comes in. The shutdown period should ideally cover the incubation period
of the virus and more.

It forces people with symptoms to call for help while shielding other people from the virus.
That way, we can surgically isolate and test all the contacts of the infected.

Massive testing is useless without shutdown of some form.
Every country that refuses to implement it earlier is suffering from an increased spread of the disease.
The UK is a good example. Even Germany has decided to elongate its shutdown as a precaution

Even without medical intervention, a shutdown can solve the virus problem.

As it is now, no single state in Nigeria has implemented a complete shutdown.
People still freely move about in the streets and socialize.

If Nigeria relaxes the partial shutdown, up to 70% may be infected as some epidemiological
models of non-interventionist social distancing has shown. We are not prepared for such.

Testing capacity should be increased faster, the lockdown should continue but with better welfare packages beyond sharing rice and garri in crowded centers.

The economy will suffer hugely if this lockdown continues for the next 10 days

Your post should have ended right there - concise yet says it all.

Japan is actually doing what u r suggesting and it seems to be working just fine despite their being close to Wuhan and not having advantages of our tropical climate. Same with Seol, South Korea (see below)
India, on the other hand, is having very serious problems, not from the virus, but from the lockdown.

Below is an argument I presented to a guy quite some time ago:
—————————

Ok, it is established fact that AT MOST we’d lose less than 2% of those who get this virus (though currently it is 0% for Nigerians permanently living in Nigeria!). 80% of those who get the virus either never have symptoms or have very mild symptoms.
How many people do u think will die if there is mass starvation plus all the social ills that’d come with closing down everything? Plus the irreversible damage to the economy?
If u calm down and look at it UNEMOTIONALLY you’d see the sense in what I’m saying. (Also remember that both our birth rate and population density are quite high).

Also, SINCE THE DEATH RATE IS SO LOW, we can go the herd immunity route - gradually as more and more people recover and therefore develop immunity to the virus, we’d eventually develop herd immunity, at which point the virus is defeated.

Here’s the rest of my argument to the guy (which is totally original by the way):

First of all we’d be doing everything other countries are doing except TOTALLY shut down our society. People will be sentisized to not crowd together, to social distance, to wash hands, to use face masks, etc, PLUS we’d also be treating those we can treat, which will save some. So there’d be no “everyone is allowed to be infected at the same time, with no one taking care of anybody“.

Secondly, it is established that 95% of the infected, get well without needing any special medical care (so for them it is just like, say, malaria)

Thirdly we’d have more people who have survived the virus and therefore whose blood have immunity and can be used to treat the sick (this has been shown to work)

Fourthly, ok I know this is not a diplomatic thing to say but it is the truth: we should remember we are overpopulated.
It is better that we fight a war and win and come out stronger (though losing some people), than to close everything and hide like cowards because of an enemy we know we can defeat (though we’d lose some people while doing it). Countries have gone to war instead of surrendering, knowing fully well they’d lose half their people!

the stay at home is always for 2 to 3 weeks so that more people could show symptoms and get quarantined its not a forever lockdown, if we rely on just testing, am afraid Nigeria cant afford the 10k testing kit for all citizens and jack ma wont keep donating
