Look, there is no easy solution to this menace, however you look at it. Any step taken to resolve/manage this issue will affect people's lives and businesses adversely. It's all about doing the least worst thing. Since we started our lockdown soon after our first confirmed case which was earlier than most countries in Europe and US did, hopefully our lockdown shouldn't last for months. However, for the time being, the government need to provide something for the low earners. They've failed at this so far, just as they've done in almost every sphere of governance since time immemorial.

Lordswazz:

Both the lockdown and taking protective measures outside compromises human lives in a poor country. Nigerians will die if the lockdown lasts for months, combined with an astronomical spike in robberies and petty stealing. People will be malnourished and suffer unimaginable hardship if this lockdown should drag on for long in a country as poor as Nigeria; where some people live on day-to-day earnings. Some will rather the virus affects them on a full stomach than pass through excruciating suffering and eventual death (should the lockdown continue). Seun is making a whole lot of sense.
One month into this lockdown and you'll see what i am saying start coming fully into play. The country was already ravaged with poverty before now, and except respite comes soon (in form of a cure or vaccine), three months is enough for chaos to start erupting everywhere.

So i read on one of the post about some lagosians protesting as a result of hunger due to the lock down by the president.

Some people don't even know what we are in. Countries like US, Russia.... etc, are devising a means to fighting the deadly virus while their citizens stay indoor. Here we are in Nigeria, displaying stupidity.

It is not even like there is a lock down in lagos, because you still see people disobeying the order, you see cars running on the roads, bike riders doi
so youre saying the common man should sit at home and die of hunger? the average Nigerian lives on hand to mouth daily hustle.
how do you expect them to survive, two wrongs cant make right things. the US, Russia that you used as case study, their citizens sit at home and get what's needed at dia doorsteps with punch on their phone, can you say the same over here?

the common man would rather choose to die of covid 19 than to die of hunger. Face it, the government dumb and cluless.

Staying at home is not the answer for a country with so much poverty. There is no point in saving ppl from the Coronavirus only for them to die of hunger and malnutrition and increased crime. The lockdown policy is simply unsustainable. It is at best a temporary measure to enable the government to get it’s act together. It is not a long-term strategy.

There is no country that has beaten the Coronavirus just by asking people to stay at home. The countries that are beating the Coronavirus, China and South Korea, both did 2 things:
1) Massive testing of suspected cases and isolation of infected people.
2) Encouraging everybody to wear face-masks in public to dramatically reduce the rate of transmission, because many carriers of the virus have no symptoms and can still spread it

Those are the key things we need to do. Shutting down the economy will rob us of the financial resources that we need to carry out the measures that actually work. If we actually calculate economic losses for each day that Lagos is closed, we would be shocked.

Just as asking people to abstain from sex to prevent AIDS never worked, but urging them to use condoms worked, asking people to stay at home when they are poor, cannot work. Our government doesn't have the resources to feed everyone until the vaccine is ready. What we need is for people to use a condom for their faces when they have to go out. If 80% of us can wear face-masks, the problem is solved.
Seun do small give away here na. Na so u stingen reach. Na wa o..

The virus will be with us for months. The vaccine won't be available until next year. Massive testing and isolation, enforcement of face-masks and hygiene, etc can be sustained for years in a strong economy. Lockdowns can't. People are already protesting in Lagos after just two days!

It is not cheap. The wealth of a nation is the productivity of its people. A nation whose people are not working grows poorer every day. The true cost of the lockdown is the value of the goods and services that people would have produced if they were not forced to stay at home. The cost of massive testing and putting a mask on every face is high, but compared to the loss of productivity due to the lockdown, it's nothing at all.
well said. Good to see you lending your voice and being patient to explain yourself.

like I said before that the husband told her to stop working that as she is working she will be seen by different men, thereby making opportunities for her to cheat. I have records of all his words. she definitely doesn't like that kind of life. that's why he brought his mum to stay with them permanently.
Her life is in her hands. She should go out and work for her kids sake.

I will try to explain a little from what is happening at my end.major offices have short down close to a month now, some have lost job and some can't even afford to pay monthly rent.its not easy in any part of the world.its the normal thing government of Nigeria did by initially asking people to sit down at home for 2 weeks .this was the first step taken all over the world .the only problem is that the government didn't put enough measures in place to help the poor.it is wrong for Nigerians to compare Nigeria and America or any country in Europe with Nigeria .these are all countries with organized structures where all citizens are on the database and government know what they do for living and how much they earn.when the government knows how much you earn, they can determine and seperate bw the rich and the poor.there are lots of people who are very rich in Nigeria and don't even pay taxes, even this one's will claim poor because the government has no record of their earnings through tax system .this is a general African problem and not only Nigeria.the problem at hand is not only a government problem but a problem for everybody to solve .the rich shud help the poor in their neighbourhood, pastor and imam shud help their members in supplying food and other necessary things .sitiing down and blaming government will not solve the problem.this is an unexpected problem and was not planned in this year's budget .even several countries had to pass a supplementary budget to aid people this time.we can only hope Nigeria govt do their best ,it may not be easy due to population.i wish to state that not all companies are opened here for over a month and only important ones are opened ,but the government are doing their best to help people financially .this is only possible because government have records of what everybody is doing before the case and the government only help affected people and not people whose company wil still pay them at end of the month.people are told to sit at home,u can go out to buy things in supermarket ,u have to keep a distance of 2 meters between the next person .u keep a distance of 2 meters even in public buses .all forms of gathering are banned,no church ,mosque, gyms etc schools closed down.banks only open for few hours and only important offices are allowed to open .I think the government shud not bann those who sell food but just tell them to ensure safe practice to prevent spread .the police shud be on ground to check that people adhere to rule

she wants to work but the man goes there to embarrass her, most times delay her at home from going to work. then after few months she will be sacked.
the last job she got last year, she was paid 10k a month as a teacher, the husband will travel for weeks with no money in the house for her and no food, whenever she calls him, he will tell her to use her salary to feed the family, since she said she wants to work..I witnessed this with my own eyes.
eventually after 6months June last year, she was sacked.

If only 20% of the people understood the bold, the world will be w much better place. Especially in Nigeria where productivity is replaced by activities.

You have to understand that in corridor of power in naija, Yes Yes Yes attitude is a bog problem. They probably bragged to baba or bubu that the cash transfer can reach most of the poor and affected and Buhari too like a combatant commander will believe them. He may not even know 50% of what's going on.

Seun, leaving people to walk about freely with face mask is supposed to help find the cure? Don't you know the country you leave in, abi have you relocated? You think Nigeria is as developed as China and South Korea? A large percentage of people in this country still believes Corona virus is a myth, once you give such people the opportunity to move freely, they'll take it for granted and as you know, the symptoms doesn't manifest until after some days, so in the meantime they'll keep sharing it up and down. Is that your best solution?

The people who are seriously looking for the cure to the virus are out there fighting, the ones who can do almost nothing about it can contribute by staying at home and preventing the spread.
This period won't last forever, the only thing I wish is that the Nigerian government try to meet the needs of her citizens just like every other sane country is doing. Hunger kills faster than Corona virus sad
You have sense no be small.Very intelligent contribution.
