The O2 Sensor The O2 sensors measure the oxygen in the exhaust gases coming from the engine. You do normally have two or more O2 sensors. You have one in front of the catalytic converter and one behind the catalytic converter. The front sensor measures the oxygen and adjusts the fuel mixture from it. The rear sensor is just a diagnostic-sond for the P0420 code. If you have a V-engine you do often have two O2 sensors per bank (Cylinder 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 etc). Possible Causes of a bad O2 Sensors * Faulty O2 sensor * Faulty electrical connectors After some Miles on the car ODO meter you are mandated by the car company to change the sensors, which varies from car brands. Possible Issues with bad O2 Sensors * Check engine light * Possible higher than normal fuel consumption. We Nigerians tend to overlook this issue just because our cars don't go through emission test here. It's very important to pay attention to it. The kind of statement I hear from some customers are; It's not actually consuming fuel like that. Sebi it sha working let me be using it like that. First you bought the car used and you don't even know the level of fuel consumption first hand so no matter what amount of fuel consumption you think you have you can have better with a good O2 sensor(s) 2 Likes

The Camshaft Position Sensor The camshaft sensor measures the position of the camshafts. The camshaft position sensor is a crucial part of the engine management which ensures that the engine runs smoothly. The sensor is responsible for collecting information about the car’s camshaft speed and send it to the Engine Control Module (ECM). This data is used to determine the ignition timing and fuel injection timing. That’s why a camshaft position sensor is needed and it will get a better fuel economy. Problem - Hard starting condition/Long cranking time Causes - Bad camshaft position sensor Symptoms - Reduced engine performance Check engine light Solution - Change the Camshaft Position Sensor Problem - Hard shifting condition Causes - Faulty wirings to camshaft position sensor Solution - Check for Corrosion in connector to sensor Other problem incudes Faulty ECM(Rare) Repair wirings to sensor Clean connector to sensor Replace ECM/PCM (Rare) If you notice any of this call the attention of your auto technician. The Crankshaft Position Sensor This crankshaft sensor is functional every time you use your vehicle. Therefore, there is a great chance of damage to different parts of this component, such as the wiring, the wheel, the pin, and the magnet. In the case of light damage to the wheel or the pin, the crankshaft sensor can still produce confusing readings. If the wires are damaged you may experience fluctuations and your engine may hesitate. If the magnet is not calibrated, it can attract the metal shavings in the engine compartment and can cause the readings to increase incorrectly. The crankshaft sensor can wear or fail due to continuous use over time. In such cases, the crankshaft sensor needs to be repaired or replaced. [b]Symptoms of bad or failing Crankshaft Position Sensor The most common symptoms of a bad or failing crankshaft position sensor are that your vehicle may not start or your engine will stop while driving. You can also experience misfires and a Check engine light flashing on your dashboard. The crankshaft position sensor can fail due to various reasons and its failure results in a number of engine related problems. Such as 1. Check Engine Light 2. Loss of Acceleration 3. Engine Vibration 4. Increase in Mileage 5. Hard starting 6. Engine stalling 7. Engine Misfire If the diagnostic code lies between P0335 and P0338 it indicates that the problem is with the crankshaft sensor. The solution to most fault is just changing the Crankshaft Position Sensor [b]B-Automobile Nigeria Limited 1 Like

The Knock Sensor The knocking occurs in the spark ignition of the international combustion engines. It is caused when the spark plug flame ignition is not responsible for the combustion of the fuel in the cylinder, and the fuel mixed with air explodes outside the combustion front. In such a case, the knock sensor senses the knocking and generates a signal read from the detonation vibrations by creating a voltage and transmitted it to the computer system. The computer then evaluates the signal transmitted from the knock sensor to slow down the timing. Signs of a Bad Knock Sensor The knock sensor is a sensitive piece of equipment that takes a lot of heat from the engine. Sensors are usually placed away from extreme heat but this is one of the unfortunate sensors that get a place close to the Combustion Chamber inside the engine block As such, over time this sensor can wear out and give in due to constant usage. The signs Includes: 1. Loss Engine Performance 2. Engine Misfires 3. Spark Plugs Go Bad 4. Check Engine Light Solution(s) If the knock sensor has issues, you are bound to see a P0325-P0332 error code. And if it's not the harness, it is best to change the sensor. And you are good to go. Mass Air Flow Sensor Measures the Air Mass going into the engine Engines use a mixture of air and fuel to operate. Without either one of them, the engine’s performance will be affected. To measure the amount of air that flows into the engine, automotive engineers have installed mass air flow sensors. These sensors calculate the air coming in and send the information to the car’s onboard computer, called the ECU, to analyze. Based on the valuable information received from the air flow sensor, the ECU makes the appropriate adjustments to the fuel and air ratio. Signs of a Bad Mass Air Flow (MAF Sensor) As the mass air flow sensor is directly linked with the engine, any issue with it can result in disruptive performance. There are some common symptoms which occur when the MAF sensor gets damaged and some main signs of a bad MAF sensor #. Lean idling #. Cold Starting #. Engine drags #. Delay In Acceleration #. Excessive Fuel Consumption #. Check Engine Light Location Hose between air filter box and throttle body Solutions Check the wiring or the harness and if they are ok change the Mass Air Flow Sensor B-Automobile Nigeria Limited 08055347947 2 Likes

What Is an ABS Sensor? The core function of the ABS speed sensor is to monitor, record and transmit the information about the manner in which the tires rotate. If there is a slippage between the wheels of your vehicle, the ABS sensor would quickly alert the ABS system. The message is generated from the difference sensed by the ABS sensor and it is transmitted to the ABS control unit. As a result, the ABS would engage and override the manual braking of your vehicle. Basically, the ABS speed sensor consists of a magnetic sensor which carries out the principal function. Upon the principle of induction, when the tone ring slots pass from within the magnetic lines of forces of the magnetic sensor present in the ABS sensor, a voltage will be induced. This voltage then generates a signal for the ABS control system. Although this is the most common principle, in some vehicles the design may use a different approach. Usually, such a sensor is mounted on everything that has a rotating body. It is essentially a safety anti-skid braking system. Symptoms of A Bad ABS Sensor 1. Your Vehicle will take more to stop on Braking 2. Pumping Brake Pedal On Braking 3. Vulnerability on Wet Roads 4. Check Engine Light Solutions Change the ABS sensor Check the wiring or harness In some instances the ABS module can stop working and it affects the working abilities of the wheel speed sensor. The ABS Module The anti-lock braking system on a vehicle is an additional safety feature found on many modern vehicles. The ABS system is designed to help prevent wheels from locking during heavy braking situations, preventing the vehicle from skidding or hydroplaning. The ABS system is made up of the ABS module, and ABS sensors at each wheel. Symptoms of Bad ABS module Unresponsive brake pedals Brake Pads require More Effort to Push Speedometer Fluctuate. Note: Not in Most Cases The ABS Light comes on The Brakes Are Locking up Check Engine Light When you experience most of this issues, get a technician to run diagnosis and fix up. The most easy solution is to check for open harness or wiring breakage and lastly changing the ABS Module. B-Automobile Nigeria Limited 08055347947

Blackbishop:Oga my case slightly differs from your topic but still tangent to autos though. While awaiting the compulsory NYSC that I would be due for in 9-11 months time I have been advised to use this period to gain practical knowledge in my area of interest as an engineering graduate since all we do in school is calculations with zero practicals. I want to plead with you to create an opportunity for me in your business to help me acquire a bit of practical knowledge before heading out for NYSC. I am a Mech Engineering graduate flexible enough to adapt to your ethics. Thank you in advance. |

Good day sir, I'm having issues with my Nissan Altima 2002 transmission (auto transmission). After moving for like 15 minutes the gear will stop selecting. If I park and switch off the engine and wait for like one hour and start the car the gear will select and work perfectly for like 15 minutes and will stop selecting. My mechanic doesn't really know what is wrong with the gear. He brought one gear mechanic, the gear mechanic couldn't pinpoint what is wrong with the gear. But one thing I noticed is that I started having this problem after changing the engine. I wasn't having this problem with the former engine. The former engine was smoking that's why I changed it. The gear was brought down, washed thoroughly and serviced when the engine was changed. Since then I have been having this problem of the gear not selecting after working for like 15 minutes I'll be glad if you can tell me what is wrong and way out! Thanks |

paking: Good day sir, first from 2002 to 2006 model of your car model uses what I refer to as TCM - Transmission Control Module. It act like a Brainbox for transmission. When you changed the engine you were suppose to relearn the TCM to sync with the new engine. But first I will ask you to scan and send me the fault codes to know where the problem is. But from experience that is the probs with such situations.. B-Automobile Nigeria Limited 08055347947 |
