Lingo Africa, the foremost human capital development platform in Abuja, Nigeria has been doing a lot of social listening in the last few days. So many young Nigerians that are working in small businesses within the private sector are now being laid off due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Just a few weeks ago, Nigeria seemed to be blissfully unaffected by the pandemic, but as of today, the county has a record over 200 active cases of Coronavirus!

Small businesses can only do so much to stay afloat and some of them have been forced to join those who have laid off their staff members, just to keep their heads above water. Can we blame them? The experts say that the lockdown has affected businesses especially those in hospitality, tourism, logistics, transportation, restaurant, entertainment, education sectors. As more businesses close down, there is no way of making an income to pay workers.

In Nigeria, some small companies are already sending termination letters to their employees as the lockdown continues to make more active businesses take a pause. As the number of active cases keeps rising, one can only hope that in the foreseeable future, businesses can go back to normal and laid off staff can be recalled. However, the reality now is salaries are being slashed, and people are losing jobs, leaving individuals and families with nothing to hold on to, except their rainy day funds, which are dwindling fast!

The sad thing about Nigeria is there is no active welfare system where people can file as unemployed after they have been laid off and have the government assume responsibility for their welfare until they get back on their feet. However, Lingo Africa has been able to outline a few active solutions for those who have been laid off. Please, note that you can use this opportunity to launch your own small business and get funded or you can apply for grants as well as seek a new job. Below are the few solutions we recommend;

The COVID-19 Support from Nirsal Microfinance Bank – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the N50 billion Targeted Credit Facility (TCF) as a stimulus package to support households and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. See who is eligible and apply by clicking this link.

International Women’s Media Foundation Emergency Fund – The Emergency Fund is sustained with the support of individual donors to address the growing need to provide direct assistance to women journalists who are suffering. To apply, you must be a staff or freelance woman reporter, working in any medium, whose primary profession is journalism. You must have worked full-time as a journalist within six months of applying for assistance. You must apply for assistance with a crisis situation directly connected to work as a journalist, including job loss.

United Nations Volunteers for COVID-19 Work – Skilled professionals are called upon to help the United Nations fight the global pandemic. They will be provided with basic care and can leverage this experience to land jobs after the pandemic. Take advantage of this opportunity and apply by clicking this link. PLEASE, READ ALL THE DETAILS CAREFULLY!

Gray Matter Capital CoLABS 2020 – coLABS is an early-stage investment portfolio seeking to invest in bold, innovative, and widely scalable social enterprises that have the potential to dramatically improve the lives of women and girls across communities in Africa. In addition to financial support, coLABS also works towards building the capacities of social entrepreneurs and social enterprises by extending advisory support and connecting them with other stakeholders in the social impact ecosystem.
