Buliwyf: fool, we know. but the fact that nobody contested it further underlines his work as one of the best literary works ever to come out of Nigeria. even Wale Adenuga did a TV adaptation of it, so shut your hole. 1 Like |

Just like yesterday, 20 years gone. I was at the lying in state in Amphitheatre, OAU. I remember when JP Clark was introduced, all the students in the amphitheatre stood up and clapped for a long time. |

Buliwyf: It is an adaptation of Oedipus Rex. Adaptation is allowed in Literature, as long as you don't claim that the original story belongs to you. Ola Rotimi never claimed that the story belonged to him. 1 Like |

Maliqcious: Soyinka was in OAU then. It was during that time that he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. He also founded the Theatre Arts department of the university and was its first HOD. Ahmed Yerima (another playwright) was taught by Soyinka at Ife. Clarion Chukwura was also one of Soyinka's students. Soyinka is an emeritus professor of OAU. During that time, OAU was the second best university in Africa. |

Buliwyf: Mumu, it wasn't copied, it was an adaptation, same as Ahmed Yerima's Otaelo is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello. And adaptation is an important part of comparative literature. |
Re: Ola Rotimi's 82nd Posthumous Birthday Is Today by Opiletool(m): 2:45pm On Apr 13, 2020 |
Tocynone: Gosh, you dudes should learn to read. It was an adaptation, not a plagiarised work. If it was plagiarised, he would have been sued when he was alive. So many old works were adapted as long as the theme, scene, and plots have slight differences. Adaptation is studied in Literature classes, especially Comparative literature. Get that? Ahmed Yerima adapted Shakespeare's Othello to create Otaelo. Several other works out there, and not limited to books alone, movies, music are also included, as long as the original writer is acknowledged one way or another. |

Buliwyf: Hello, when next you post in a public forum, please get your facts right, ughn? The post reeks of ignorance. There is an absolute difference between adaptation and plagiarism. Ola Rotimi's "The Gods are not to blame" is an African adaptation of Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex" and not a copied work neither is it a plagiarised work. It is called adaptation in theatre scholarship. Just as Femi Osofisan's "Tegonni" is an African adaptation of Sophocles' "Antigone" Kola Ogunmola's "Palmwine Drinkard" is an adaptation of Amos Tutuola's novel, "The Palmwine Drinkard" Femi Osofisan's "Who is Afraid of Solarin" is an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's "The Government Inspector" which was also later adapted to "Yeepa! Solarin Nbo". |

Buliwyf: There's a difference between plagiarism and adaptation. The guy did the latter. You'd know that if you're a theatre practitioner. Rotimi wanted to Nigerianize a Greek play by one of the greatest dramatists the Greeks have produced.... Sophocles (along with Euripides and Aeschylus). That is allowed in the world of theatre. Soyinka did that with Euripides' play. Other great dramatists have done that. Get a copy of the play, check behind and you'd see that Rotimi has made reference to the original play. P.S: I'm a theatre practitioner |

JJBROS: The people of Benin got very angry with the end of that play and therefore called Ahmed Yerima (another great dramatist) to rewrite the play 1 Like |
