Chevron response to Sahara Reporter claim on Quarantine of Personnel in an hotel in Warri. https://www.nairaland.com/5795488/100-chevron-employees-suspected-having PRESS RELEASE Chevron Nigeria Limited is taking precautions against the spread of COVID-19 virus Lagos – April 15, 2020: Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation/CNL Joint Venture (NNPC/CNL JV), has continued to operate safely, and without any Coronavirus (COVID-19) related incident in its operations. CNL affirms that as a responsible organization, one of the precautionary safeguards it has put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus into its operations is the introduction of a compulsory two-week supervised quarantine for all personnel returning to work at its Escravos Operations during this period of the pandemic. CNL’s General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn explained that the precautionary safeguard enables CNL to provide a controlled environment for very close monitoring of the personnel during the period of the supervised quarantine. He added that in order to make this safeguard effective, all personnel will first be required to provide a comprehensive travel history before they are placed in the supervised quarantine. Reacting to speculations that CNL quarantined some of its staff suspected of having the Coronavirus in a hotel in Warri, Delta State, Esimaje affirmed that none of CNL’s employees has contracted the COVID-19 virus. He clarified that based on the Coronavirus directive issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria regarding sustained operations in the oil and gas industry, CNL entered into arrangements with some hotels and other facilities in Warri and Lagos where their staff on rotational duties will be accommodated, and their health status monitored to ensure that they do not have the COVID-19 virus before returning to work at its Escravos Operations. According to him, the first group of personnel scheduled for quarantine were moved to the designated facilities on Friday, April 10, 2020 and other groups will follow based on the crew change schedule and the personnel will be required to strictly maintain social distancing protocols, personal hygiene, and use of appropriate personal protective equipment during the supervised quarantine period. “We are also working with the hotels and other facilities where the personnel will be placed, to ensure that the hotels and facilities maintain high levels of sanitation and follow strict adherence to all COVID 19 protocols,” he stated. Esimaje declared that at the end of the two-week period, only those who are certified free of the COVID-19 virus shall be moved to Escravos and that anyone with suspected symptoms during the period will be subjected to further testing and subsequently transferred to government designated hospitals for further handling in line with the government approved protocols. “Chevron continues to monitor the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak around the world and has been utilizing the guidance of local and international health authorities. We are regularly updating our workforce and will continue to adjust plans as appropriate as we receive more information. Our top priority is to ensure the wellbeing and safety of our workforce and their family members, and we are taking precautionary measures to reduce the risk of exposure,” he remarked. 2mch: No,they are not right. its like this. most offshore facilities run a 2/2 or 4/4 weeks rotation. hotels are made available where crews going to or from the offshore installation normally spend at least a night(depending on their travel intinary) before proceeding with their journey. so what Chevron is doing is that instead of the incoming crew spending just a night at the hotels, they are made to spend up to 2 weeks to ensure that they are not bringing covid-19 into the facilities and these applies to even national staff coming from within Nigeria. 85 Likes 5 Shares |

Saharareporters now peddling fake and unverified news. It behooves them to verify the claims by the people they quoted, before going public. They seem to be losing credibility every passing day. With this, it shows Chevron is taking responsible and proactive steps in combating the spread of the virus. Good initiative and kudos to Chevron. 30 Likes 2 Shares |

Wilstino: Please don’t discredit or attempt to shake our confidence in SR. It was reported that suspected persons with convid 19 were quarantined, not confirmed cases. You quarantine suspects while you isolate the confirmed. The rejoinder by CNL is a diplomatic one. As a business person, even when you are wrong you must know how to wrought diplomatic answers for every occasion. 16 Likes 3 Shares |

Sahara reporters story prompted this response by Chevron, the residents have valid call for suspicion since it is strange in the area. Wilstino: CNL did not deny they were quarantined introduction of a compulsory two-week supervised quarantine for all personnel returning to work at its Escravos Operations during this period of the pandemic. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Sahara Reporters made it look like these were people who were suspected of having Corona virus (because they were exposed to a confirmed case or just returned from travel from an infected country). These people have not arrived from any foreign leave as the border has been closed for over 3 weeks. Meanwhile, these are just everyday Nigerians like you and I who are going back for their tour offshore to relieve those who have already finished theirs. They are only there because it is a condition that has been set by the industry stakeholders, prior to proceeding to the worksite. So most if not all IOCs ensure that for every personnel (staff and 3rd party contractors from service firms, even food catering staff) going offshore, said personnel must spend 14days under the watch of the client in a facility (hotel) that has been set up for that purpose. Those who live around the environment have nothing to fear as those lodged in the hotel are no more suspicious of having the virus as those who reside in the vicinity going about their daily business. 19 Likes 1 Share |

Ventura1: I'm not disputing the residents concern but my point was that saharareporters did not seem to have carried out due diligence, to validate the claim, before going public. An excerpt from their publication below: ****More than 100 employees of oil giant, Chevron Nigeria Limited, suspected of having Coronavirus, are currently being secretly quarantined at Cyprian Hotels and Suites The Chevron employees are said to have recently returned from leave and vacation abroad. “Is it proper in this era for a company to assemble its staff returning from vacation without detailed travel history and quarantine them in a hotel in a populated neighbourhood instead of isolating them in their various homes or hospitals provided by the state government?*** From CNL's response, it just their own precautionary measures following the outbreak, to check all their guys going for their routine rotational duties. It's not people who returned from leave and vacation abroad as alledged by saharareporters. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Wilstino:Sahara reporters is a citizens reporters platform and what you posted are quotation in verbatim from residents of the area. The responsibility of the residents is to cry out if they notice something unusual and the onus is on CNL to respond, which they've done and they never denied those staffs were quarantined. Many mainstream media would not have publish the story, even if it's true....they would have made mince out of it. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Ventura1: People will cry out for anything they deem unusual which could be true or lies. It behooves the media to investigate, validate before reporting. See the demaging headline of the report by saharareporters. ***EXCLUSIVE: Over 100 Chevron Employees Suspected Of Having Coronavirus Secretly Quarantined In Delta Hotel | Sahara Reporters** It portrays Chevron as vicious and nonchalant. Whereas, it's a just sensible precautionary measure it has taken to check all its workers. Don't try to hold brief for saharareporters, they are not infallible. 9 Likes 1 Share |
