Nag Hamadi Texts & Gnostic Christianity by oluwaahmed: 7:50pm On May 08, 2020
Gnosticism was a system of worship early christians (2nd Century AD) engaged in. There were many scriptures then about the doings and teachings of jesus and many Christians believed in this. There was no formal organised structure of leadership and the early Christians didn't lay much importance on building structures of church because they believed only the knowledge which Christ tried to impact was the way to ultimately unify with the true God and thus gain eternal life. Churches were basically a gathering of brethren & sisters where they all meditated on the teachings of Christ. This all changed in 450AD following the establishment of the Roman catholic church by Emperor constantine.
In my search of divine truth & knowledge in Christian Dom,I stumbled across the teachings of Gnostic Christians and it seems to make the teachings of Jesus clearer. Now this happened when I came upon the Nag Hammadi texts. The Nag Hammadi texts are a collection of gospels earthed in Egypt in 1945. These gospels include; The gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Truth, The Gospel of Mary magdala etc. These gospels bring a different type compared to Mathew, mark, Luke & John. They are not descriptive in nature but only pure sayings and teachings of Jesus.

For E.g Jesus says in the Coptic gospel of Thomas; "If those who lead you say, 'See, the Kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you.
Rather, the Kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and
you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living Father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty
and it is you who are that poverty."

Now from this text you can see why gnostic Christians were persecuted by the new church of Rome. When Jesus tells you that the kingdom is inside you, why would you obey a person that tells you the church is a temple hence the need to pay tithe so that God will bless you? Why would you listen to church authority that removes sabbath from Saturday to Sunday? These and many more were reasons why gnostics were called heretics, persecuted and the gospels burnt. However a monk buried this gospel which was unearthed in 1945.

Pls any Gnostic Christian should reach out let's assist ourselves in the journey to enlightenment.

1. There only formal leader necessary as far as those who belonged to the Kingdom of God was Jesus Christ Himself. He revealed to all of those who would follow Him that He alone was all the leadership, the guide, the teacher, the shepherd, etc. they needed and required. Sadly, beginning from the first century, as apparent in some of Paul's own epistles, some disgruntled among the flock decided they needed to use the opportunity to acquire for themselves and their own benefit control and power over those who instead belonged to Jesus Christ. undecided

2. You at least realize how much different from the other gospels many of those writings are. undecided

3. Jesus Christ already made it abundantly clear to His followers that they are not to have any other teacher/master/leader/shepherd over themselves aside from Him. What is written in the Gospel of Thomas are snippets that do not make complete sense unless one is well-versed in the teachings and commandments of Jesus Christ presented in the Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. undecided

4. What exactly do you believe as one who claims to be a Gnostic Christian? undecided
