The Irony Of A Governor: Buhari Denying Wike Covid-19 Fund Has Turned Him Against His People

The controversies trailing the fight against Covid-19 in Nigeria, is getting messier in Rivers state, with governor Wike Going practically crazy with his action against his people. Though Covid-19 has been in Nigeria for few months now, the way the government, both federal and state have been going about it, has been of politics than of striving to save the people from the ravaging scourge of the pandemic. To fight the pandemic, the federal government of Buhari released N15bn to Lagos State, and N5bn to NCDC, to drive their efforts against the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria.


This fund release, was the beginning of the rat race by governors to get a share of the Federal government Fund for Covid-19. Sadly, the NCDC added to this race, when it decreed that Covid-19 must spread across the nation. So, Governor Wike waited patiently for Buhari to look at his side, in the release of Fund, but he was ignored. Then he voiced out his frustration over Buhari not giving Rivers State money, after giving Lagos N10bn. Afterwards, Kano government requested for N15bn from Buhari, like it was a contest of governor's demands. He was ignored too, but Aisha Buhari instead, took truck loads of PPE to Kano, as against the money that Kano government had demanded.


When Wike saw the impossibility of ever getting cash from Buhari, he turned against his people. And total lockdown was placed on Rivers state, and oil workers who violated the lockdown were flamboyantly dealt with, and given wide publicity in the media.

This also placed the FG against Rivers, especially in the case of Carverton Helicopters operators whom the Federal government had given a pass to fly despite lockdown, without notifying the Rivers state governmen

Wike on his own was praised for his initial proactive approach to the coronavirus curtailment fight; but when Buhari, and most companies in Rivers state didn't give him money, he decided to unleash terrible anger against his people. In the first place, companies have no business giving government money to perform its responsibility. As he couldn't punish the companies, the only way he could treat them badly was to shutdown the state and deprived them from functioning. But this is actually to the detriment of the state's IGR, especially now that oil price has greatly fallen in the global market, and no more much money coming from Abuja. Besides this, shutdown also subjects Rivers people to untold hardship. For as Coronavirus is not a disease outbreak in Nigeria, all that needed to be done is to trace the contact of whoever is found infected and have them isolated; and not the inglorious shutdown that the government has been using to threaten the citizens.


Wike knowing that he wasn't getting Buhari to budge, decided to be brutal. First he ordered that cars confiscated during the coronavirus shutdown be auctioned, and then he demolished hotels of those he claimed violated the lockdown rule. Reasonably, lockdown is not to punish citizens, but to be able to keep a supposed infected persons stational and their possible contacts traced. Meaning, any violator should be carry to isolation and be sure he or she is not infected. And once cleared of that, he or she should be let go. But Wike is allowing power to override him and therefore misbehaving. How does violating a regulation to stay at home, leads to the demolition of building as a punishment, or selling of violator's car as punishment? This can only happen when a power drunk man is in power in a structureless nation.


It is barbaric for an executive governor to be the law giver, the judge, and the executor of judgement. If there was a violation, the offenders should be arranged in court and let the court decide, what punishment should be melted out according to the law. What Wike has/is doing is him, actually demarketing the PDP in Rivers state. His actions so far with regards to the auctioning of cars belonging to alleged offenders of the executive order and the demolition of hotels belonging to other offenders is a huge absurdity that paint Wike as an unintelligent power drunk.

Governments have always destroyed markets, pulled down illegal structures for the common good of all.

The law was followed to the letter because the government had political will.

Imagine if a culture of strong political comes to bear on our governance, our institutions would be strong and incorruptible. It is from here you begin to build an egalitarian society of our dreams.
