Contrary to those who dubbed the January 15 1966 coup “an Igbo coup” the coup plotters made it clear that only political leaders and their military collaborators were to be arrested, it was to be met with force whenever an arrest was resisted. Adewale Ademoyega, member of the trio that formed the January 15 1966 coup in his book 'why we struck' said “There was no decision at our meeting to single out any ethnic group for elimination. Our intentions were honourable, our views were national and our goals were idealistic. Even those earmarked for arrest, four were northerners, two were Westerners and two were Easterners... According to Col. Hilary Njoku, the commander of the 2nd Battalion Lagos, in his book "A Tragedy without Heros" has this to say; T he North had always had 50% of the intake of officers into the Army since 1961, and more than 70% of the intake of the other ranks. Therefore if casualties were to happen, it was more likely to be in that proportion.” On the morning of January 15 1966, there were six Igbo Lieutenant Colonels. None participated in the coup, there were 45 Majors in the Nigerian Army, and about 24 were Igbo. This means that, at least 18 had nothing to do with the coup. On that same morning, the General Officer Commanding was Igbo, the Brigade Major was Igbo, The Staff Officer ‘A’ branch at Army headquarters was also Igbo. Igbos and other Easterners who were already predominant in the upper hierarchy of the Army as at January 1966, exact percentages were put at 60% and 73% as at March. None of these senior Igbo officers in the upper echelon of the Army were involved in the coup. If all these men occupying sensitive and top positions were involved in the coup, could it have failed?

Continue deceiving yourself. Nyamiree, you must continue to suffer the consequences of your grandparents action of 1966. You people are naturally greedy, you had the president, the chief of defense staff, and other powerful positions in Balewa administration but you are not satisfied. You went ahead to killed all the notable northerners and Westerners because of greed. The same greed made Ojukwu to sacrifice 3000000(three millions) igbos. Now this hunchback (NNAMDI KANU) is trying to sacrifice more pigs because of greed. We are ready for you people. "You do anyhow you see anyhow ". 4 Likes |

According to a Nigerian Police Special Branch Report, Nzeogwu executed at least 4 army and police security personnel including one of the men on his team (Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke). Nzeogwu also participated in the execution of Col. Raph Shodeinde, his superior officer at the Nigerian Military Training College and is reported to have shot indiscriminately at fleeing women and children.[8] After waiting for an early morning radio announcement from Major Adewale Ademoyega in Lagos which did not take place because of the failure of the coup in Lagos, Major Nzeogwu made an mid-afternoon announcement, declaring martial law in Northern Nigeria. |

On the night of January 15, 1966, a coup d’etat took place in Nigeria which resulted in the murder of a number of leading political figures and senior army officers in Lagos, Kaduna and Ibadan. This was the first coup in the history of our country and 98 per cent of the officers that planned and led it were Igbo. From the political class those that were killed included the following: Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister, who was abducted from his home, murdered and whose body was dumped somewhere along Lagos-Abeokuta Road; Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of the old Northern Region, who was killed in the sanctity of his own home together with his wife and his security assistant; Chief S.L. Akintola, the Premier of the old Western Region, who was gunned down in the presence of his family and Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, the Minister of Finance, who was abducted from his home, brutalised, murdered and dumped in a bush. From the ranks of the military, those that were murdered included Brigadier Zakari Maimalari, who had held a cocktail party in his home a few hours earlier that evening which was attended by most of the young officers that participated in the coup.; said Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun, who was shot to death in his matrimonial bed along with his eight-month pregnant wife. Also killed were Col. Ralph Shodeinde, Col. Kur Muhammed, Lt. Col. James Pam, Lt. Col. Abogi Largema, Lt. Col. Aurthur Unegbe, PC Yohanna Garkawa, PC Haga Lai, Lance Corporal Musa Nimzo, Sgt. Daramola Oyegoke, PC Akpan Anduka and Ahmed Ben Musa. E no go better for Flattinoes .....greedy lots. |
