Emoya Luxury Hotel in Bloemfontein, South Africa, was once all over the blogosphere.

But the exposure had not been the type that the "unique accommodation experience" had bargained for.

Gizmodo magazine called the hotel "A Fake Slum for Luxury Tourists Who Don't Want to See Real Poverty."

At Emoya's Shanty Town, guests stay in a re-creation of an "informal settlement" - shacks made of corrugated iron sheets. "Millions of people are living in informal settlements across South Africa, and the continent" reads the Shanty Town homepage.

"Now you can experience staying in a Shanty within the safe environment of a private game reserve," continues the website.

"This is the only Shanty Town in the world equipped with under-floor heating and wireless internet access!"

Each shack in the "town" goes for 1,400 South African rand (28,000 naira) a night, sleeps four people and has electricity and running water.
Rooms are equipped with donkey geysers (water heaters) and long drops (outdoor toilets).

The concept hotel launched in March 2013 but there has been serious global backlash.

Such a crazy world. You mean people should pay their money to experience what poverty feels like?

Would be far cheaper crashing with an actual family in a real shantytown. They need the money more.

It makes business sense like Disneyland. Many people wouldn't wanna go into ghettos anyway for safety reasons even in America, Rio or London

It would be better spending the money to revive those areas.
