You have things such as Halo Wars which is essentially chess.


You have COD which in my opinion requires no strategy because you’re playing a bunch of 12 year olds that just learned the n word, had sex with your mother, have five girlfriends, and smoke weed all the time.


But what I crave in the end is something few games truly require, actual strategy that changes real time. Games such as the ones in the Command and Conquer series

C&C 4 which really was the death knell of the series in spite of being the final one in the production line. This game required serious strategy in a manner very similar yet very different from Starcraft.


Overwhelming jackass strategy that requires you just hit them hard with a lot of people strategy, something really achievable with the Chinese (without the minor aid from the US).

But of course there are other games like this but they don’t have the hard part of the game in it, base building.


Look at this poorly defended base. It looks well guarded (it’s not to an extent) but it entirely relies upon having enough power. Oh this is Tiberian Sun Firestorm by the way.


This base is rather well guarded even though it relies on a lot of power. Provided that the opponent doesn’t have access to an Ion Cannon (GDI super weapon) this base will do well. The firestorm wall (the track like wall surrounding the structures in the bottom left) will stop aircraft and ground troops alike. There is cement (gray stuff) to stop the opponent from digging up through the ground with their transports to deploy a bunch of infantry at once. The two problems that I see is that this requires a lot of power and that the silos (round looking things in the top right) are unprotected.

Real Time Strategy is something that isn’t found in many games today, sure you can put chess into a new format and call it a strategy game but it’s turn based. You can have mobile structures and strange units, but you still have a unit limit (Starcraft).

In lieu of Real Time Strategy I find the best part of a game to be consequences. Seriously, I love games that don’t forget that concept. Games like the Mass Effect Series, Dragon Age, the Deus Ex series, Witcher (pitchforks), and Telltale’s games especially TWD have a serious thing with story consequences.
