No vote for Jonathan if STF stays in Jos - Plateau women | Print | E-mail Written by Isaac Shobayo, Jos Tuesday, 01 February 2011 OVER 20,000 women in Jos, Plateau State, on Monday staged a protest along major streets of the city, denouncing the continued presence of the military Special Task Force (STF) in the city and threatening to withdraw their support for President Goodluck Jonathan if the soldiers are not withdrawn from the streets of Jos. The women, who trooped out as early as 7.00 a.m. in black attires, paralysed business activities in the early hours of the day and obstructed vehicular movement within the state capital, forcing some commercial motorists to withdraw their services. They walked through Yakubu Gowon Way, DB Zang Way, and terminated the protest at the Jitshe Government House, where they were addressed by Governor Jonah Jang, along with some of the state top government functionaries. Some of the placards carried by the women bore various inscriptions condemning the activities of the STF. One of them read: “STF, pack your load and leave Plateau. Stop killing us, go after the real trouble makers.” At a point, they shouted “no vote for President Jonathan” in the coming presidential election, if the military was not withdrawn from the streets of Jos before the election. Addressing the women, Governor Jang, who saluted their courage, enjoined them to be calm, adding that President Jonathan, in conjunction with the state government, was leaving no stone unturned to find a lasting solution to the crisis. Governor Jang, who said it was not all soldiers that were bad, said in every setting, there were bad eggs, adding that there were many professional soldiers willing to carry out their assignments without any sentiment. In a related development, the Vice Chancellor of University of Jos, Professor Sonny Tyoden, said last week’s attack on the university was the first in the history of the institution. According to the vice chancellor, the university recorded 17 causalities, 14 students shot and three others sustained injuries, adding that no student of the institution died in the attack. The vice chancellor said that in the December 24 2010 bomb blast, the university lost three students and two staff. He, however, stated that normalcy had since returned to the university, adding that normal academic activities would resume by Thursday this week and enjoined all the students who fled the campus to return. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/16956-no-vote-for-jonathan-if-stf-stays-in-jos-plateau-women
