If the victim is still in contact with the source of electricity, remove him from this contact or, preferably, shut off the current. If he has grasped a live wire, it may be that muscle contraction due to the passage of the current makes it impossible for him to release his hold.

Extreme danger attends any attempt to free the victim from his contact with the electric current; the rescuer may make a similar contact and become a second victim.

If possible, pull the switch to shut off the current. Otherwise, insulate yourself thoroughly by standing on a dry board or some other dry nonconducting material and then with hands thickly insulated by dry newspaper, several layers of dry woolen cloth, or a sheet of rubber, drag the victim away from the electrical contact.
