With the influx of Uk, USA used and even Brand new iPhones into the country in recent times due to high demand and sometimes appealing cost price tags, I felt the need to educate apple customers on this one particularly because Nigeria is a difficult place so whatever we spend hard earned money on has to be worth it or at least should satisfy the consumer needs optimally and it’ll be risky to test the water resistance capacity of a refurbished iPhone simply because refurbished devices have usually been opened(worked on) and that feature may be compromised plus several other features that may not live up to their expected standard. However this could be an option for a lot of Customers due to it’s attractive low price tag.
Simply put, You can accurately know if an iPhone is brand new, Refurbished, Replaced or a personalized device by checking the Model number/Letter.
If the Model number/Letter starts with letter M, it is/was a brand new iPhone device that was purchased at authorized apple stores and has not been worked on, If you see N then it means it is a refurbished, F also means refurbished and P(very rare)is a personalized device. Personalized devices are iPhones that have some extra security on them, they usually ship on demand but Apple generously includes some P devices on their pool of consumer retail phones. Refurbished iPhones usually work as good as new devices but may begin to develop problems in nearest future because the replaced parts may not be as authentic as their originals.
To find Model number/letter Go to Settings-General-About phone-scroll down and find model number.

I believe they usually remove the follow-come and replace with all those market batteries hence the terrible battery life.

Happens if the person buys it from seller who got a third party to refurbish the phone instead of doing so at Apple centres just to save cost and get profits...

Even when they are refurbished by Authorized apple stores, the parts are not the same as an original
