Majority Of Christians Cannot Tell You What “jesus” Really Means by ThinkFreely: 9:23pm On Jul 07, 2020 |
We have heard a lot of theories as to how the name “Jesus” was coined from Yeshua into Lesous in Latin to give JESUS in English. But if we are going by literal translations of this name from Hebrew to Greek to Latin and Then English, you will discover than Jesus really doesn’t mean anything in any language. Christians don’t know this. Yeshua will be translated to “Savior” in English, “Soter” in Greek and “savator” in Latin. You cannot really use the pronunciation “Jesus” to replace any word in Hebrew, Latin or Greek sentence. So what does Jesus really mean? How was it transliterated into “lesous” in Greek? 1 Like |

ThinkFreely:Was it not Rome that commissioned the work to translate the greek scripture to Latin? So you should probably start with Catholic sources if you are serious about learning about how we arrived at the English name 1 Like |

MikeBetty:I guess you mean Yeshua Hamashiach, which means Savior the Messiah in English, pronounced as “sotiras o messias” in Greek and “Christum salvatorem” in Latin. What does JESUS mean? 2 Likes |

ThinkFreely:Why would I want to use Jesus in any Hebrew, Greek or Latin sentence though? I wouldn't use the English transliteration of my Nigerian name either in that way. |
Re: Majority Of Christians Cannot Tell You What “jesus” Really Means by ThinkFreely: 10:24pm On Jul 07, 2020 |
LordReed:I have always looked into it. That name doesn’t mean anything in any language that I know. If you think I’m lying, contact anyone in Italy and Greece for the literal meaning of Jesus in their language. They will only tell you it’s a name for a Christian god. It doesn’t mean anything in their languages. |

Kobojunkie:What does JESUS mean then and in what language? I doesn’t mean anything in either Greek, Latin or English. Except the fact that it’s a name for a Christian god which we don’t really know how it was coined. |

I've had this argument with a lot of my Christian friends on why they call The Messiah - "Jesus" instead of his real name "Yahshua" which has a symbolic and powerful meaning. For example, the Israeli Prime Minister's symbolic name is "Netanyahu" - which means "Yah has given". That's what everyone calls him instead of translated names like Nathan, Natin, etc. |

MikeBetty:Why? Because you want to believe the copies written in the original language were not written and supposedly preserved by the hands of men? What makes you think that any copy I presented of the original Greek New testament has not itself been manipulated? |

ThinkFreely: The name and title of the Son of God from the time of his anointing while on earth. The name Jesus (Gr., I·e·sousʹ) corresponds to the Hebrew name Jeshua (or, in fuller form, Jehoshua), meaning “Jehovah Is Salvation.” The name itself was not unusual, many men being so named in that period. For this reason persons often added further identification, saying, “Jesus the Nazarene.” (Mr 10:47; Ac 2:22) Christ is from the Greek Khri·stosʹ, the equivalent of the Hebrew Ma·shiʹach (Messiah), and means “Anointed One.” Whereas the expression “anointed one” was properly applied to others before Jesus, such as Moses, Aaron, and David (Heb 11:24-26; Le 4:3; 8:12; 2Sa 22:51), the position, office, or service to which these were anointed only prefigured the superior position, office, and service of Jesus Christ. Jesus is therefore preeminently and uniquely “the Christ, the Son of the living God.”—Mt 16:16; |

Mrshape:Jehovah is the Latin pronounciation of Yehoshua. Yehoshua is that it comes from the root ישע yod-shin-'ayin, meaning "to deliver, save, or rescue". So how did Jesus come or lesous come into the mix because in Latin, Jehovah the salvation is suppose to mean “Jehovah salvator”. How did Jesus come into the mix? Don’t just assume, find out. calm down and do that. It will do you a lot of good to ask questions about it. |
