How can another woman carry my own child in her own womb for nine good months? That's absurd! Am I not a woman too? Will that make her the mother? Will the child be more attached to her than me? What will people say?...What will they think? Will I have a bond with the child?

These are some of the vocal thoughts of most conservative women in Africa especially in Nigeria when it comes to the topic of Surrogacy.

In developed countries, the concept of surrogacy has been widely accepted by majority of women and men. But before we go further, we need to understand what surrogacy is and what it entails.

Surrogacy is an arrangement often supported by legal agreement whereby a woman (the surrogate) agrees to bear a child for a person or persons who later becomes the child's parents.

In gestational surrogacy, an egg is removed from the intended mother or an anonymous donor and fertilized with the sperm of the intended father or anonymous donor. The fertilized egg, or embryo, is then transferred to a surrogate who carries the baby to term.

In western world, we have diffferent categories of women who opt for surrogacy.

Firstly, we have those with fertility issues. These women could either be in marriage or not. Most women in advanced world's opt for surrogacy even when they are not married or hooked to anyone.

These women want to have children of their own. These women don't have marriage in their to-do list but crave the warmth that only a child of your own can give. Most of these women are career women who have chosen to focus on building an amazing career in life which is a beautiful thing and the society celebrates them for that.

The second category of women are those without any fertility issue but do not desire to carry a child in their own womb. These women want kids of their own but don't want to carry them in their womb for nine months. These set of women opt for a surrogate to do the job for them. They have their reasons for deciding this and the society respects that.

Some of these reasons are not wanting to put on massive pregnancy weight thereby making them loose their body shape. Another is not wanting to go through nine months of discomfort carrying a human being in their belly. There is also fear of labour and many more.

Whatever reason they have, these set of women are not judged for the choices they make and they go ahead to make themselves happy by paying for the job to be done for them.

The men are not also left out. Most men opt for surrogacy too. These men desire to have children of their own without having to get married to do that or having a babymama somewhere. Most of these men are career men aswell who have chosen the pursuit of money making in life with children of their own to marriage or babymama drama and the society honors them for their decision.

In the case of the men, an egg donor would be required for the process. Most surrogacy agencies abroad provide information on egg donors or the surrogate could volunteer to donate her eggs for the process.

For all forms of surrogacy, two element must come together to make it a success. And that is a sperm and an egg. Now these women use their eggs and get a sperm donor. The ones in marriages or relationships get their partners sperm. Most without a partner would have to get a sperm from a sperm bank. Most IVF clinics abroad provide such informations for these women and they embrace it with open arms. These women go ahead and have their babies despite what the society thinks or says. But in Nigeria, the reverse is the case.

Nigeria is still a growing economy and most inhabitants are not aware of the concept of surrogacy. Most Nigerians are conservative in nature and adaptation has become a huge task. That is one of the reasons surrogacy still remains an unspoken topic in this part of the world.

In America and other western countries, there are surrogacy agencies. These agencies help in finding healthy women who are willing to carry another woman's child for money. These agencies tend to connect couples or single women and men with willing surrogates.

These surrogates are paid handsomely by their clients. Agreements are made and a complete followup of the surrogate is done until she puts to bed. The surrogate is tested to be sure she is completely healthy to carry a child before anything is been put inside her.

Nigerians in general need to be more open to the concept of surrogacy. Surrogacy has come as an alternative for women and men alike who desire it and as such should be embraced with open arms. Nigerians need to stop being closed minded to theses things because surrogacy is an option and it has come to give hope to so many people in Nigeria.

In the past years, so many American celebrities and influencers have opted for surrogacy to carry their own children. The likes of Reality TV Star Kim Kardarshian, Hollywood Actress Gabrielle Union and EPL Football Player Christiano Ronaldo are among those who have had their children through a surrogate and are living happily with their kids today.

Can you opt for surrogacy? Shoud surrogacy be encouraged in Africa and Nigeria? Do you think the concept of surrogacy should be frowned at? Is it a taboo? What do you think of people who engage the services of surrogates? How do you view surrogate mothers? What are your thoughts on surrogacy in general?
