THE SITUATION IN NIGERIA.

The lecturer who insists on sex for a young girl to pass is complaining about the rot in Nigeria.

The pastor who pays his driver 20k in Lagos or PH while his own son schools in the US is complaining about the hopelessness in Nigeria.

The trader who removes 2 bowls of rice from the bag, rebags and sells as a 'full' bag is complaining about the wickedness in Nigeria.

The civil servant who comes to work once a week and shows up end of month to receive alert is complaining about politicians who do nothing.

The student who spends the weekend partying only to start posting Instagram pictures on Monday is complaining that Nigeria is stealing his/her dreams.

The motor owner who can't join a simple queue but keeps darting in and out of traffic to shunt is complaining about disorderliness in Nigeria.

Doctors in public and teaching hospitals on government payroll who abandon patients on the floor but are thriving in their private hospitals are complaining that Nigeria is hopeless.

Until we realize that the value of Nigeria today is the average of our own individual values, we will keep fooling ourselves.

We are all architect of our economic development woes. Stop the blame game. Our attitudes and unpatriotic behaviour should stop.

All the thing you complained about happened only because you have no government in the first place.

Thousands of lecturers gets away with sexual harassment to the extent that it's now an unwritten law for girls to pass. The government is careless about the girls.

The pastor is paying the driver N20k only because your government chose policies that impoverished the people and killed industrialization by killing infrastructure development. The driver can only accept the N20k or starve.

The trader who removes two bowls does so because SON died a long time ago. Nobody is afraid of punishment because even the police takes bribes openly in front of the rice seller and the government never frowns against it. What goes around comes around.

The civil servant who comes to work only once in the week is doing so because his boss the commissioner or the minister is in a hotel in Abuja or London sampling babes all week long with government money. No fears of anything because they are all guilty.

The students can spend the whole week partying because he can settle the lecturer and pass while the government is completely careless as they are deep in sleaze on their own.

How can the motor owner join a simple queue when he can settle police , road safety, VIO, and even if buharri comes out to stand on the road, you can settle him with N50 naira only and nothing happens grin

Wetin concern doctor who are poorly paid, his hospital equipment in government hospital is routinely looted, salaries of nurses seized and zero job security.

The stream got soiled from the source.

Truth bro...

But, the foundation stone was laid by the Government, the one at present seems to frustrate the more....
The past few years has made honest folk to follow the status quo... No thanks to our leaders..

The house helps can only leave their parents house to slave their lives away in those places because the government refused to pay pensions to their fathers in their real homes. The roads to their communities where the poor man should have been passing to take farm produce to the cities is so bad that he is stuck with his rotting crops.

Painful as it will be, he can only give away his wards to slave away somewhere so he can have less mouths to feed.

The government is still to blame.

Have you ever gone to Court to get one affidavit or the other? You pay over N1000 only to be given a receipt of N200 or less.

I did an attestation and they collected N5000 only to present a receipt of N250 just at the acclaimed "Temple of Justice"

This is the same thing as complaining that Nigerians dont stay in line or asking why people pay police at roadblocks.

Nigeria like any other country is made up of an aggregate of ppl all making different diverse decisions. Transacting with each other and trying to land a good deal for themselves. Now it is a lie to say that the regular Nigerian is responsible for his predicament without highlighting the personalization of governance and political processes.

The bulk of the country is lower income and many of the subjects u mentioned are barely representative of the country's people. Military fiat rule and corrupt civilian politicking has essentially created an isolated existence for the unprotected. For example, Murtala ruined lives with his brash civil service reforms that ended up incentivising personal welfare over government and public interest on the part of civil servants. That a Jonathan or a Buhari or whomever can retire u maliciously or strip u of particular benefits by legal means or intimidation gets one thinking more personal about the now and their belle. Not their job to dole out permits , execute policy or perform their duties as they should.

This ofc ricochets for the regular man. The ordinary Nigerian who lives within the framework set from above. He is forced to transact on his level with whatever or whomever can protect his welfare, regardless of the secondary impact on his environment. This is just an example. An example that u can extrapolate across the board to every facet of life (military civilian govt- work private-sector private-life school etc).

The theme is set from above. Because esp in our country where consumption and investments are functions of government expenditure and earnings which is ofc driven by net exports of oil, people's actual livelihoods depend on what they can secure for themselves in the economic pie/national cake complex. Those who dont act are left behind in line. Or so it would seem. Even tho ofc that's not true. One can live a good productive life and still be well off. However, emotions and panic usually yield a rather uncouth reaction from most ppl. Whether uncharacteristic or not.

When a president or governor or ranking public servant can act above laws, sit on top systems and dictate in an extralegal and informal manner it transfers down the line. Personal power is a problem in Nigeria and Africa. Because the authority is not held in impersonal institutions where the individual matters less than established procedure.

Taking out examples of malfunction in our daily life without explaining the root cause is too simplistic. Basically reading out domestic iterations of a concept and not defining its roots and sources. Which you have wrongly defined as being situated at the ground level. What emanates from the populace that makes it a source? Is it investable funds almost entirely in the hands of the state and high business or even political choice that is controlled by party bigwigs? Or the frustration and poverty that reeks at the bottom of the ladder is what qualifies it as the 'source'?

Buhari GEJ Obj Ibb Abdulsalami Tinubu Wike etc all of them are the problem. These individuals and many more like them, have abrogated to themselves the destinies of millions by virtue of control of state power. Not any exceptional ability. That's why the country is stagnant. Willful and thoughtful leadership is the real solution.

These individuals and many more like them, have abrogated to themselves the destinies of millions by virtue of control of state power. Not any exceptional ability. That's why the country is stagnant. Willful and thoughtful leadership is the real solution.

The problem with this point of view is that it creates artificial distinctions between the 'government' and the people whereas there really isn't a difference, because the government entirely consists of people of same stock and hue. I. E. The people.

The so-called IBB, OBJ, GEJ, Amaechi, etc, that constitute the ruling elite, 99% of them come from humble backgrounds. Many of them were dirt poor idiots who life and its vicissitudes favored. Ordinary people join the elite ranks daily, by virtue of luck, favorable moves, etc. Look at someone like GEJ for instance and analyse his trajectory.

The point is that the ordinary, lowly Nigerian of this moment, once he happens upon some wealth, or power, or influence, is likely to abuse it. This dysfunction, or malaise if you will, in my well-considered opinion, is a bottom-up problem. It doesn't flow from the so-called 'leaders'. Nigeria's problem is a people problem, not a leadership problem contrary to what the likes of Chinua Achebe and yourself would argue.

If we had enough numbers of conscientious and above board ordinary people, Nigeria wouldnt be the shithole it is today. Pure and simple. The leaders aren't aliens. They come from amongst us.

If the present and past crop of political and public office holders are wiped out completely, and replaced with randomly (or even purposively) selected Nigerians picked from common folk, things would remain the same if not worse. The fools would simply see themselves as the next set of people to 'chop' the proverbial National Cake. It would be their 'turn' to be a menace to society. Simply a change of personnel and identities while the flawed system remains unchanged.

The change we all crave will never flow from top to bottom, because even if by some stoke of luck an angel is appointed president, there wouldn't be a critical mass of like-minded and reformist 'enforcers' across the public positions, bureaucracy, and further down to drive the desired change.

There is something fundamental wrong with Nigerians (and by extension, the black man, but that's a matter for another day). And this 'something' afflicts both leaders and followers (who are essentially the same, with merely different social circumstances).

While my proffered solution is at best simplistic I'd say there is a difference. Yes, those ppl made it from poor backgrounds. But they now exist as pillars in a personalized system. Point is that lack of institutionalization is the problem.

If u look at personally run civic organisations in Canada or anywhere it's the same thing. The incompetence and disorganization shines thru.

It's a platitude to say that the black man is this or that... u'd be forgetting other factors. Same thing that makes 90 percent hispanic towns in the US look and function much better than their equivalent 99 percent hispabic towns in Mexico just across the border from them. If u allow personalization someone's whims is going to take charge. That might not be for everyone's good. Those names I mentioned are just that. Epitomes of personal power.

Remove the clog in your eyes and reason properly for once

You are the one who has never reasoned well; from your attacks on GEJ to supporting Buhari and APC as some "savior".

The reality is no one; not even in America follows procedures in place unless their is government regulation and legislation in place and entities which enforce them.

Nigeria is lawless because it is literally LAW LESS. If the government would establish regulation and legislation which doesn't provide loopholes and outright punishes these behaviors (including establishing agencies to checkmate their own entities) these "corruptions" would die down significantly.

That is not the case though.

Also, the fact that Nigerians believe oil should be able to pay for a country of +200 million people is laughable.
