With a vast background in the Art, an incredible profile mixed with a series of creative and interesting visual representations — You have Toluwalope Ajayi, one of the leading female artists of her time and a phenomenal mixed media artist who experiments with different materials ranging from fabric to paper, beads, broken CDs and stones.


Toluwalope, recently, unveiled a new art work which has met with the admiration of many and in fact, made her one of the subjects of conversation in the space of avant-garde artists. The completed project which has the figure of a lady in red smiling at anyone who stares at it, was cooked in Tolu’s art kitchen majorly with stones.



Speaking about the process on Sunday, Toluwalope said, “It was a very interesting one although it was a long process. This is because it is my first time of doing a portrait to look exactly like the person using stones. I have done it with stencil but this is my first time using stones. It is time consuming, requires patience and in fact, the brain has to be super active because this time around, you are not just painting on a flat surface, you are painting on stones. Deciding the layers of colors and arrangement of stones to arrive at the desired effect; these are things we have to consider. However, it was an interesting experience overall.”



Toluwalope includes that when she got tired at some point, she was motivated by the vision she had for the ‘Stonism Movement’ and her belief that, this would influence the face of art in Nigeria and beyond in the near future.

Toluwalope Ajayi is the pioneering figure of the Stonism Art Movement — an experimental art movement which defines the range an artist could cover painting with stones. Many of her works are inspired by the happenings in her environment, the Nigerian society and the world at large. With her art, she aims to encourage others young artists to explore, maximize their potentials and make a difference in the world of art.
