What Would Have Been Nigeria's Lingua Franca If We Weren't Colonized ? by UniqueDennis(m): 11:58pm On Aug 01, 2020
Sometimes i have wondered which language Nigeria or Nigerians would have adopted as its formal lingua franca if we were colonised like a few nations in Africa like Ethopia for instance..

Considering that Nigeria is a highly ethnically diverse nation with also a proportional number of complex languages, it would seem plausible that we would have adopted a common foreign / local language due to our diversity...

But which language would that have been? English, French, Spanish, German, Swahili or one of our local languages like Hausa... And if we hadnt adopted any lingua franca for instance, how would the absence of not having a common language or lingua franca affected the way we interacted with each other especially during inter-tribal marriages and out general way of life as a nation...

Just want to get a public opinion on this.. thanks

If we were not colonised they would be no nigeria in the first place and we would not be united to speak a common language it would be every man to his own language. And as such we would surely have different languages. undecided

even now that we were colonised we still speak different languages like igbo, hausa, yoruba e.t.c undecided

The language spoken by the dominant tribe in the regions would be adopted as the lingua Franca. Through it, a local pidgin version would be developed on the streets and there you have it.

Nigeria is a white man's idea of what a group of West Africans should be.. colonization didn't just conquer land - it conquered the mind and tongues of various people.

Without colonization, you'd know your proper identity. You'd know no Nigeria. You'd be you.

There would not have been any nation called Nigeria.
Why?, Because those who named us Nigeria gave us the Language we are speaking today.

But I guess your question would have been,
what would have been our language as a
country apart from English?.
My answer would have been
ZULU.

We are a business masquerading as a nation. You can tell by the way government treats it's citizens - like disposable products.

You can tell by the lack of care to national symbols and statues. You can tell when you notice Nigerian is an African country that has very few African holidays.

You can tell from what we think, how we act, our dirty surroundings, highways, parks, stadiums, and derelict government offices.

A country has a heart and a soul - we have none except a love for money. Thanks to oil that pays for our lack of mental foresight.

2020 and we still haven't figured out how to keep a light bulb on for 24 hours. A huge chunk of the population are traumatized daily, and have no where to run to but God.

We are not independent - we still live in dependence.. check your phones, cars, wristwatches, and movies.. which of them was created by you?

Does your language have a word for 'processor' or 'Ram'.. where does the food you eat come from? The books your read, who wrote them? What you know about yourself, who taught you?

We are not confused - we are lost.. Forgetting where we came from, we have become swept up in the dust of time, going whereever it blows. We are a rudderless ship, with untrained captains and loyal soldiers. Time will tick us off, like it has done many a lazy people.

Nigerians and their stream of thought seemed to defy reality. If there was no colonization, Nigeria would not have existed. It is a waste of time thinking about the formal lingua franca in place that never existed.

Wow!!!! MetaNonsensical, so you can equally stray into the lane of this constructive frame of thought. Tribalism is the worst case of Nigeria's issue.

If Nigeria was not colonised there would have been no Nigeria. We would have been in different countries where the dominant language will be the commonly spoken one. There maybe more than 1 official language depending on what the people want.

Well, i agree with you that without colonization, Nigeria most probably would never have existed due to the peculiar dissimilar nature & culture of the regions & people that were eventually merged to form Nigeria.. But that doesnt mean colonization is the only process or factor that brings about the merging or unifying of different groups or regions to form a nation.

Spot on, i cant agree less.. Its no wonder the country may never really work as an entity the way its currently structured cos its obvious the fundamental basis of our existence is just a mere farce..

Yeah. I grew up singing 'Abrahams blessings were mine'. My schools barely touched African history - all we memorized were Israeli myths, mixed with a bit of sciences.

We were taught to sing 'London bridge is falling down', like that had anything to do with me. Their gods are our gods, their stories are our stories, their heroes are our heroes.

I never learnt about colonization, or it's effects on the continent. In my head, Israel and Judah was where all knowledge came from - at least knowledge that mattered.

You wanna fix this nation, you gotta fix the knowledge production centers. Too much time is spent on regurgitating old parables and stories. Our head is not right.
