A massive blast in the Lebanese capital Beirut is likely to have left over 100 people dead and 3,000 others injured.

Initial reports indicate that a ship carrying fireworks caught fire and exploded but it was eventually reported that fire at a warehouse with explosives at the Port of Beirut led to the massive blast which tore down a three-story building and was heard across the city and its suburbs.

The warehouse stored explosives that had previously been seized, Lebanon's police chief said.

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that those responsible for the incident will be brought to account.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun assembled the High Defense Council at the Baabda Presidential Palace in the capital following the explosion.
