Seven Feared Killed In Fresh Benue Violence

Saturday, 12 February 2011 00:00 From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi News - National

DESPITE the deployment of soldiers and mobile policemen to the hinterland of Gwer West local council, some suspected herdsmen continued armed attacks on farming communities in the area, killing about seven persons in early morning raids yesterday.

The herdsmen, who invaded Tyotegh ward in Gwer West Council of Benue State since last Monday, have been staging constant nocturnal attacks on farming villages in the area, where they have razed down more 100 homesteads and displaced over 20,000 villagers residing in 10 villages in the council.

Death toll in the conflict has risen to about 28 persons, with more than 300 persons critically injured, many with bullet wounds. Several women and girls in the area have also been allegedly raped by the invading bandits who over-powered the communities and confounded security agencies with their coordinated pattern of attack and retreat.

Thousands of farmers, women and children dislodged by the invasion in the area have been in camps in Naka and Kula towns. Some have been camped at Agagbe town.

A victim of the attack, Orshi Orduen, who is presently taking refuge at the Primary school camp in Naka, said that he saw several corpses before he fled the area, with some members of his family.

He said that the herdsmen also raped several women and girls on the fateful day. He noted that they were fully kitted in military fatigue and wore bulletproof vests for protection.

However, the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam met with Fulani leaders in Makurdi on Thursday, pleading with them to prevail on the attackers to half their action.
Leader of Fulani in Benue State, Alhaji Ibrahim Gani told Suswam that the invaders were not residents of Benue State. He however said that he would contact the invaders to retreat.

Suswam later visited displaced persons in different camps in Naka and Kula. Soldiers have been deployed to protect the camps.

The governor announced that relief materials and water tankers would be sent to the camps at the weekend, while medical doctors and nurses have been directed to tend to the injured and sick.

When The Guardian visited the Naka camp yesterday, displaced persons claimed that they received information that the militiamen would strike in the heart of the camp at the weekend. Some were seen leaving the place in panic to put up with their relatives.

The conflict started last weekend after some farmers allegedly slaughtered the cattle of a herdsman in Tyotegh ward. After the killing of the cattle, herdsmen invaded the ward last Monday in retaliation and have since continued the onslaught for five consecutive days.

When Contacted, Benue State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Mohammed confirmed the killings adding the Police Command was working hard to contain the crisis.

Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by EzeUche2(m): 5:57am On Feb 12, 2011
These Fulani are something else. They remind me of the barbarian Huns that raided their civilized/agrarian neighbors in Europe. Those Middle Belt people better wake up, before the Fulani take their land from them. This is only the beginning. How are you going to allow these attacks go unpunished?

I weep, Gwer West is deep in Benue meaning that Fulani People have entered deep into benue to carryout these attacks in benue territory far from any hausa fulani base , Yet they are successfull and the Governor is begging them , And worse still is that only one cow was killed for all these, The Middlebelt is finished ,
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by Nobody: 6:57am On Feb 12, 2011
Great, hope the fulanis are doing all these with intension to start a fullscale civil war, so that the stupid agregation will breakup!
Im actually perplexed and short of words, the Tiv people that we consider as warriors and fearless are now begging the fulanis!

Aw dem take get military uniform with bullet proof vest? Help from the Nigerian Army? Just like the accusation from indigenes of Plateau state? The elites of the south and middlebelt are so d.a.f.t that they cant read meanings to all this things happening.

Lets not forget that they slaughtered their cattle!

And we all know the Fulani man value his cattle more than anything!

He who brings home the ant infested log - Invites the lizard to lunch!

@greateros,
do you also know if tiv people value their crops more than anything?
If any blame should be passed, it should be on the fulani herds men who grazed on their crops FIRST!

Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by ngutsav: 1:31pm On Feb 14, 2011
This is unbelievable. This is just to inform the Benue People (Tiv, Idoma, Igede etc) that they should wake up. They should forget about the leaders of the land. The leaders have committed themselves in collecting material things and allowing them to settle. Moreso, they have been blindfolded by politics. I can not imagine the Tortive who is suppose to be chief custodian of the tradition, value and norms of Tiv is politicking. Secretly though. But it is obvious. This for the sake of money. we the youths(benue) have to wake up and fight for our future generation. This is no longer an eye opener but eye cleaner. where ever you are as a Benue person sensitize your people living at home(village). tell them to wake up. For some of my brothers that think it can not reach them (their land), they should stand fortified and ready and not just to make statements like " it is not possible in our land" it might be during your generation. Now what u have to do is to conscientize your younger once. this is a long term plan by the (fulani).

I really do not know the extent of readiness of Ndigbo in the south-eastern states especially in Enugu to deal swiftly and decisively with the barbaric endeavors of these Fulani herdsmen. The trend is looking like a new and none military accomplishment of the prophetic dipping of Quran into Atlantic Ocean. The have already moved into Ogoja and Obudu and there is no doubt the recent harassment in the Benue axis is to link up with the inroad already established in Ogoja. Some minorities will always capitulate in the presence of aggressor. I am not surprised that the Governor of Benue State has gone begging.
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by EzeUche2(m): 2:28pm On Feb 14, 2011
The crisis has already started. It is not "about to" start. When they killed all those innocent women and children in that village near Jos, that is when this conflict went into crisis levels.

People should say it will be a crisis when it happens in their own backyard. That is what you all mean.
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by otokx(m): 2:35pm On Feb 14, 2011
They will keep attacking until they meet a firm and bloody resistance.
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by bashr4: 1:23am On Feb 17, 2011
i blame the yorubas, ijaw and the so called middle belters for this , if they had not put hand in the civil war we were already teaching those bastards a lesson. thay are not goin to stop they have not stopped in jos, somepeople in the military are supporting them, this is wat happens when theres a lot of division especially amongs the least populated tribes.

Yet someone had the audacity to declare that Nigeria has been safer in the past year compared to previous years.

Where is the government when the people need them most? Do people, and communities now have to accept that if they do not fight back, there is no hope?
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by asorocker: 8:55am On Feb 17, 2011
One is forced tto ask is this not the same Tivs that once proclaimed that they will spill the last drop of their bloods for the sake of the unity of the country, yet they cannot spill one drop of sweat to defend themselves from external agressors.

some one should tell them that charity begins at home and not at your neighbours home
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by kettykin: 9:36am On Feb 17, 2011
My take is that the father of all wars is around the corner , the fulanis will soon meet their match in ibos or ijaws , however will the remaining part of the country remain neutral or will they back the hausa / fulani like they have been doing all this while
Re: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Again! by T9ksy(m): 10:22am On Feb 17, 2011
. . . . . . . . and where are the so-called nationalists?
Oh so now they (the pseudo-nationalists) remember the prophetic dipping of the koran in the Ocean?

Of course, we are One Nigeria!!!

And One Nigeria we shall remain till the whole pho.cking nation implodes.

Shoooooor. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

leave room shaking my head.
