The Nigeria Honorable Minister of Information & Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed joins the Honorable Minister of Transport Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi on Saturday August 15 embark on an Inspection/Tour of the Lagos-Ibadan Rail Line” project.

Amechi who was accompanied by the minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed inspects the level of works at the Ebute Metta stations and yard constructions.

Work began on the Railway line in March 2017. When operational, the service is expected to have 10 stations and the trains will operate at a maximum speed of 150 km/h.

The section to Ibadan is part of a longer line between Lagos and Kaduna, in north–central Nigeria. This $6.7bn project, which is also being built by CCECC, was approved in 2018. It will intersect with CCECC’s first rail scheme in the country, a north–south link between Kaduna and the capital Abuja that was completed in 2016.

The Chinese contractor has also built Nigeria’s first rolling stock plant to produce wagons for the railway modernisation project.

CCECC was awarded the project back in 2012 but could not commence the work immediately due to the paucity of funds. The beginning of the construction work was marked by a spectacular groundbreaking ceremony performed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in March 2017 after the project received funds from the Nigerian and Chinese governments.

When fully operational, the Lagos-Ibadan railway line project is expected to have 10 stations and trains operating at a maximum speed of 150 km/h. This project is the second segment of the new 2,733km Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway line project
