President Muhammadu Buhari has called for the immediate release of Malian president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and a return to constitutional order in the West African nation.

A statement by the State House said Buhari made the call on Thursday during a virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“President Keita and other detainees should be released unconditionally and with immediate effect,” the Nigerian leader said.

He assured that Nigeria is in support of “the efforts of President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, for wider regional and continental consultations, especially on the possibility of detaching ECOWAS and AU troops with the UN Mission in Mali, to protect State Institutions and also act as the first layer of defence in the country to help preserve and protect lives and property.”

According to the Nigerian leader, the removal of the Malian President could have “devastating consequences” for the country and the West African sub-region.Today, Mali has not only descended into political chaos but also socio-economic and security disaster with potentially tragic consequences to Mali and the sub-region,” he explained.

While commending the African Union, the UN and other international bodies for condemning the coup in Mali, he called on them to work with ECOWAS in the restoration of peace to the country.

“ECOWAS, the AU, and the UN should not stand by, while the situation deteriorates,” he said. Thus far, their strong statements of condemnation are sincerely appreciated and I urge them to continue to walk this route together with us until sanity returns to Mali with the restoration of Civil Administration.”

Other resolutions reached during the Summit include the following: firmness on the restoration of Constitutional order; release of President Keita and all those arrested; stoppage of economic relations with Mali, with exceptions granted to staple foods, fuel and medication, for the sake of the people; continued engagement with all parties to the crisis, while the Special Envoy appointed to mediate, former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, along with Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of ECOWAS Commission, are to visit Mali to convey the decisions of the West African leaders.

Seizing Power

Rebel troops on Tuesday seized President Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse in a dramatic escalation. Malian army officer, Colonel Assimi Goita on Wednesday announced himself as the coup leader.

Avoiding ‘Bloodshed’

Kaita said on Wednesday he had stepped down to avoid “bloodshed” after he was detained in a military coup, whose leaders pledged new elections.

The African Union (AU) also on Wednesday suspended Mali with the US and European Union, joining to condemn the coup and demanded the release of the detained leaders.

This life no balance at all.

See this old man talking about restoring peace in Mali. Same peace that has not been able to even maintain the normal chaos in bornu, Kaduna, benue and every corner of the country, not until things are out of hands. Then he started making excuses to how he has done his best.

So your best is releasing terrorists back to the society to bath more blood. See if there is anything that should never come out from your mouth, it is peace and democracy, Mr General.

Hearing this from a President whose government is intolerant of the voice of opposition is very laughable.

Let him instruct Buratai to release the soldier clamped into detention for the past 3 months without access to his lawyer or family despite a court order for his release. Until then he has no moral right to advise any other country on constitutional democracy.

truth is the coup is the only way to solve the issue .....

the main issue would be forcing the military to hand over within one year after restructuring the country

Ahaha!

We can only bark... The people of Mali and [a section of] their military have decided to grab their destinies with their own hands and you seat behind your zoom apps and say
Mali has not only descended into political chaos but also socio-economic and security disaster with potentially tragic consequences to Mali
because they have created discomfort for the politicians but when ordinary people kept protesting poor leadership no UN, USA, AU or ECOWAS made any comment in support of the people's demands.

Was it not the softness of democratic rule that brought about Boko Haram, ISWAP, Alquaeda, Tuareg rebels into that country. I feel for the soldiers and the people. They feel that their country will not be under occupation of terrorists had it being that the military was the Head of State.
Libya came under terrorist siege when democratic rule began. Prior to that the same UN were the ones that wanted Gadaffi to dialogue with terrorists but he instead said no and scourged them with scorpion's cruelty and brutality. Gaddafi's reaction towards the terrorists who are the citizens of Libya was what led to his overthrow by NATO, UN and US forces.
