There was no need for a count as the referee waived off the contest at the 0:30 mark of the fifth round, a stunning turn of events that upends the heavyweight division below the "big three" of Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua.

After his victory, Povetkin revealed that the uppercut he used to finish the fight was something he and his team had trained for, and that he retained his confidence even after being knocked down twice in Round 4.

"I didn't feel that I would finish the fight like this but I was pretty confident in the fourth round," Povetkin said. "Yes, I went down twice, but it wasn't too much damage. ... I was watching his fights and took into account that he missed the uppercut from the left and the right. So I trained for just those shots."

Whyte had been patiently waiting for his opportunity to fight for the WBC belt while Wilder and Fury battled through their rivalry. After looking out of shape in his previous fight, a decision win over Mariusz Wach this past December, Whyte showed up looking to be much more physically fit only to be caught by the brutal left of Povetkin.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn was quick to point out that the men had a rematch clause in the contract and that he plans to get Whyte and Povetkin back together again. The hope would be that Whyte will regain his previous status as the WBC's top contender.

"We have a rematch clause," Hearn said. "The first thing Dillian said was, 'Give me that rematch. Give me that rematch.' It was a heavy knockout, so he'll have to recover. We will execute that rematch clause. ... He will rematch Alexander Povetkin and I believe he can beat him and bring his No. 1 position back to life. Tonight, this is the ups and downs of boxing."
