However, it was discovered that Bernard Tapie had bribed several members of the Valenciennes team to underperform during their league match against Marseille just six days before the Champions League final (he wanted his players to be able to rest). Marseille were stripped of the 1993 French title and relegated. PSG were offered the title but they rejected it and so there was no French league winner in 1993. Marseille were also banned from the 1993/94 Champions League, the 1994 European Super Cup and the 1994 Inter-Continental Cup.

Bernard Tapie was convicted of corruption charges and jailed and that was the beginning of the decline of Marseille.
