30 Fascinating Details About the Titanic That You Probably Never Knew

There are quite a few things James Cameron left out.

One hundred and eight years ago, on April 15, 1912, a giant luxury passenger ship deemed to be "unsinkable" hit an iceberg and sank off the coast of Newfoundland. Though it claimed more than 1,500 lives in total, it would take 73 years for the ship's wreckage to finally be found — and still many more years to uncover the full story of the tragedy. Now, over a century later, the Titanic is still one of the most fascinating stories in history, and has inspired countless movies, books, and research about its tragic and mysterious tale. But how much do we really know about the secrets of the Titanic and those on board? To honor the 108th anniversary of one of the most famous disasters in history, we've gathered 35 of the most mind-blowing facts about the Titanic, including details you definitely didn't see in the movie.

(1) It didn't come cheap.

The ship cost $7.5 million to build. Fun Fact: James Cameron's 1997 movie about the disaster had a production budget of $200 million.

It took 3,000 Harland & Wolff shipbuilders to construct the ship

(3)It was over 882 feet long.

That's almost three football fields. It also weighed 52,310 tons.

(4)One of the smokestacks didn't work.

Only three of the four smoke stacks were actually functional. The extra one was just to make the ship look more impressive.

(5)The interior design was based on a London hotel.

The Ritz in London's Piccadilly neighborhood loosely inspired the interior of the ship. The hotel opened in 1906 and is still operating today.

The exact number of fatalities is still unknown.

There are rough estimates based on the ship manifests, but people traveled under fake names and from so many different places that those lists weren’t entirely accurate.

14)The musicians had a tough job.

The musicians on the ship were expected to know all 352 songs listed in a song book given out to first-class passengers so they could make requests.

They continued to play as the Titanic went down.

The iconic scene from the movie also happened in real life: To help calm down the guests, all of the musicians continued to play as the ship went down, ultimately losing their lives in the sinking.

It had 15,000 bottles of ale and 1,000 bottles of wine on board.

The ship was also stocked with 850 bottles of liquor as well as 8,000 cigars! Some of the champagne was actually recovered when the shipwreck was discovered in 1985.

There were first class passengers and then there was John Jacob Astor IV.

Astor was the wealthiest passenger on board. He was worth over $90 million. That's over two billion dollars by today's standards when taking inflation into account.

20)The ship's baker, Charles Joughin, was among the survivors.

Joughin spent two hours in the water before being rescued. He claimed he was able to last so long because he drank a lot of whiskey beforehand.

21)A woman who survived the Titanic's sinking later survived the sinking of another ship.

Stewardess and nurse Violet Jessop survived the sinking of the Titanic only to experience another ship sinking on the Britannic four years later in 1916. Jessop survived again, but suffered a traumatic head injury.

Another survivor later became an activist and ran for U.S. Senate.

One of Titanic's most famous survivors was Margaret Brown, who was later nicknamed "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." She became an avid activist, supporting women's suffrage and even running for Senate, though she didn't win.

23)The youngest survivor died in 2009.

Millvina Dean was two months old when she was on the Titanic. She lived to be 97.

24)Milton S. Hershey was supposed to be a passenger.

The chocolate mogul had a ticket and everything, but had to switch to another ship that brought him into New York earlier for business meetings.

25)There was supposed to be a lifeboat drill the day it sank.

Captain Edward John Smith cancelled a lifeboat drill planned on the day of the sinking. Nobody knows why he called it off.

26)They know where the iceberg came from.

The 100-foot chunk of ice was traced back to a glacier in Greenland

27)It took on 400 tons of water per minute after it hit the iceberg.

The water filled the bow of the ship first, which caused the stern to lift up into the air and eventually break off

28)It was 400 miles from land when it sank.

Newfoundland was the nearest destination, but the Titanic was already under water within a few hours of hitting the iceberg.

29)Newspapers didn't get the story right.

When news of the sinking reached the mainland, several papers misreported that there were zero casualties. Once the real numbers started coming in, people banded together to raise money for the victims.

30)A movie about the disaster came out less than a month after it happened.

Saved from the Titanic was a silent film released in May of 1912. It starred Dorothy Gibson, an actress who survived the sinking.

31.Blacks weren't allowed on....
32.The ship had three propellers, the middle one could only rotate in one direction, the other two could reverse.
33.The total weight of the ship's anchor including the chain and fittings was around 100 tons.
34.The fourth funnel in addition to being aesthetic was equally used as a kitchen vent.
35.8 people died while constructing the ship, over 200 were injured.
36. Several attempts to salvage the ship's wreck were planned, but were all abandoned eventually.
37. It was only in 1985, 73 years after the Titanic sank, that ocean explorers found out that the ship actually split in two.
38. If the ship had collided head on with the iceberg on that night,it would not have sank;hence James Cameron wouldn't have gotten the chance to break our hearts with his Epic movie...

Yeah the Titanic would have survived a head on collision.
First you have to understand that what sinks a ship isn't really a forceful impact, but a breach leading to a huge intake of water.
Now, the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable, but their village people really mean them that night.
The ship is designed that it has 5 watertight compartments lined from the hull(front) to the stern(rear).
In the event that the ship is breached the first 4 water tight compartments can hold all the water that has rushed into the ship and keep it from flowing to other parts of the ship hence the ship will stay afloat.
So if the ship had collided head on, the iceberg would have hit the reinforced hull of the ship and simply stopped it. At most, the hull will be damaged and only the first watertight compartment will be punctured hence the ship will remain afloat comfortably.
But the ship's crew made the mistake of attempting to go around the iceberg, hence exposing the entire 5 watertight compartments located along the sides of the ship to the iceberg, causing the iceberg to puncture all of them as it scrapped against the ship from hull to stern.
And once all the water tight compartments had been punctured, the ship was doomed.
If they had maintained a straight course and hit the ship straight, the water tight compartments wouldn't have been exposed.

I dont think its any village people, its just God trying to show his supremacy when they said "even God cant sink this ship" and that's really daring

Ship that "even God can't sink".

My friend would jokingly say; "the story of titanic is a very touching one until you realise that Blacks weren't allowed on board".
