This is why I have been saying for years that Onitsha metro area need its own sub-government that will focus on city development. The current structure of state government running everything is very unsustainable.

Just imagine the state of New York governor in America running the day to day affairs of New York city. That will be a disaster.

Then why do we keep doing that for a state like Anambra state that is growing rapidly?
Doesn't Onitsha have chairman , councilors and representatives?

I just like the fact that this is partnership between brothers in Onitsha and America.
Im sure this project will greatly open up entire SE for foreign direct investment from African Americans. Many of them have been looking for lands in Africa to resettle and invest in.

I welcome this news and congratulate my people. Chukwu okike abiama!

I would like to see this partnership for town planning also extend into other collaboration like land farming, livestock farming and produce export. Anambra IGR will soar. With deep investments on the soil i dont think Americans will take kindly to matters of insecurity that will threaten their money and wealth. So by extension security will also be enhanced.

Good things are coming to SE. All say iseee!

I've always posited that our major cities like Onitsha metropolitan area, Asaba, Enugu, Abakaliki, Owerri, Aba, etc, all need to have a independent mayoralty that will focus squarely on their financial and administrative governance! The major stumbling block to this are the overbearing and all-controlling Governors who want to be seen as the head-honcho in their states and wouldn't brook having to devolve and share power with another major sphere of power and influence in the state.

We make this happen by driving the need at the respective house of assemblies. Each state pass a law giving autonomy to MCC (Metro City Council) and designate what domain/s or districts will comprise of that metro area. Then make it that going forward service as MCC Chairman is prerequisite to vying for state governorship. A governor that previously headed an MCC will be far more competent than one money-miss road sponsored by money bags to run for office. Make MCC the stepping stone and proving stage for an aspiring governor.

Very great idea.
Just like so many merit based societies do. In China before you get to the federal level of politics, you have performed well in local, district, city, and provincial levels.

And who do you think empowers mayor of Atlanta,Toronto ,London or Boston ? Onitsha has a mayor(chairman) and he has the constitutional right and power to collect tax from citizens and businesses in his jurisdiction and use the money to develop Onitsha. states and local government tax differ. Most of the local government chairmen don't even know their right and are just lazy waiting for free handout .

Wrong the local government is appointed by the state government but they are not empowered to do anything financially. They are like care takers just sitting and watching things happen. Most of them don’t even have an office or show up for work.

Also speaking, the Executive Director, Mrs. Ebele Amaka Emeka-Duruem, said the foundation stone would be laid on October 6th, stressing that construction would commence in earnest.

$3.4 billion project with unknown characters without any business and investment footprint anywhere on the surface of the earth, even the writeup is dubious and sketchy.

Going by the picture below, they laid foundation back in 2019, but the sketchy and dubious writeup and the unknown executive director is talking about laying the same foundation in Oct 2020.

They lay their foundation every few months?

I don't even see any serious investor throwing that kind of money and even less in such economically depressed environment and a population with meager disposable income.

This must be a joke.

Tax works the same way money was contributed to build Imo state airport. Basically you tax businesses and residences, fine law breakers and use the money to develop and maintain the city . this method of state governors and chairmen collecting free handouts is detrimental and that's why the infrastructures are not maintained . in developed societies, you tax people to build things and then use taxes and fines to maintain things.

Completely agree with you on this part. But the system needs serious reforms. The way state government are not financially empowering local governments is drawing back city development.

The Nigerian constitution doesn’t guarantee the power of local government. It puts it under state government control.

Please look it up and you will see I am right.

Does governor of Georgia empower mayor of Atlanta ? Does Premier of British Columbia empower Mayor of Vancouver? What the chairmen need is the power which I believe they already have constitutionally to collect taxes and fines to develop and maintain their jurisdiction. They don't have to wait for free handout. Again, federal and state tax are different from local government or city tax . Regardless of what Anambra state government taxes , the local government or city or town have the right to their own tax rate . Onitsha will obviously generate more revenue than other cities and towns in Anambra , and that's what will make Onitsha the epicenter or central business district ,and make the surrounding towns suburbs of Onitsha.

Are they going to invite the same people in the picture to the new fake foundation laying next month?

I agree with you. They (LGA)have the power to tax and fine but they are not financially capable to administer their duties. They are handicapped for now. Even if the LGA wanted to carry out their duties, they don’t have the fund to do so. The state government has to fund them to carry out their duties of collecting taxes and building infrastructures of cities under their localities.

That’s why I keep telling you that they are not financially empowered.

Also, with the way onitsha has grown into other localities, there needs to be a reorganization of the local government area to merge it in such a way that it accommodates the growth of onitsha.

It’s hard to even tell where onitsha stops and nkpor or nkwelle begins. That’s why a political merger is important to better administer the rapid growth of onitsha.

The $3.4 billion Soul City project sitting on 50 hectares of land in Obosi, Anambra State, is expected to generate over 50, 000 direct and indirect jobs, the President of Soul City project, Nnamdi St. Michael Nwokoye has said.

He gave this hint at the weekend when he led a delegation to the corporate headquarters of Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation newspaper titles.

According to him, the project is aimed at bringing African-American brothers back home to also invest and integrate with Nigerians and other Africans alike.

“The city would be a podium for business. Business is the primary objective of this project. There would be an amusement park, for recreational activities, industrial layout for industrialists and MSMEs. We intend building hotels, hospitals, big time schools, mini zoo, and residential areas that can accommodate workers and others that intend to live in the city,” Nwokoye noted.

Pressed further, he said the edifice when completed would be a world class tourist attraction that would host over one million visitors every year. “We mapped out a place for industries, we have a place for hospitality industry, and we have a place for residential. It will attract every aspect of business into the country. On completion, it would be generating over 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.”

He said the over 50 hectares of land which the city would be built on in the next few years, would be further expanded in the future with more land acquired.

He further explained that the American partners are notable black people living in US, stressing that a Memorandum of Understanding and the modalities of the investment are being fine-tuned.

“We have offered 30 percent of the total worth of the investment to them. This is so because the state government would be given some stakes. We are providing the land, while the Americans, the state government, and other Nigerian investors would be providing the required finances and other technical logistics. Garry Luster, A former Mayor in US for 20 years, businessman, an estate developer and an entrepreneur is one of the investors, though, they are coming as a group into this partnership,” he hinted.

While reiterating the job prospect of the project, Nwokoye said, “This City is referred to as the new investment destination in Africa. It is the new investment hob, and it is an avenue to attract foreign direct investment into Nigeria, which means that the country’s foreign exchange will be enhanced, the Gross Domestic Product of the country would be enhanced, and above all, over 50,000 jobs would be created within the city. This would create a new dimension in the world tourism business, and especially the world wrong perception of Nigeria and Nigerians. We want to use it to clean up some of the bad images the world have about Nigeria.”

“Moreover, we also considered providing a solution for the jobless youths, so we created the model for this city which would be an answer to the ever increasing unemployment in the country. When this city comes on board, the youths will no longer waste away after passing out from the universities and this will bring them back home,” he maintained.

Also speaking, the Executive Director, Mrs. Ebele Amaka Emeka-Duruem, said the foundation stone would be laid on October 6th, stressing that construction would commence in earnest.

She said the projected date for completion of the first phase four years’ time, pointing out that over 500 high rising units of the building has been planned for the first phase.

The key thing is to try and find a way to keep money generated in Onitsha within Onitsha for its development, while only paying a percentage to Awka gov't house! Ditto for Nnewi too!

The Mayor should oversee the collection of taxes, rates and levies and only remit a percentage of say 30% to the state gov't.

With the Onitsha Seaport working perfectly, then You will see mass exodus of Ndi Igbo from Lagos. There and then you will see what it actually means to be a developer. No wonder the Governor is serious with the Cargo Airport Project. Anambra will overtake Lagos in the next five years. Mark my word.

You are most likely to see the emergence of ANAMBRA MEGA CITY from Anambra state. The current towns in the LGA areas of Onitsha, Awka, Ogbaru, Oyi, Anambra, Ekwusigo, Dunukofia, Njikoka, Idemili, Anaocha and Nnewi North would become the epicentre of the sprawling metropolis. These would gradually spill over to Aguata, Nnewi south and Orumba.

The coming hurricane is so big that Obosi would just be a part of the mega city like the other towns as we know them today.

Don't forget Asaba oo.. because she is closer to Onitsha even more.
