Putting The Marital History Of The Prophet (saw) In The Proper Context by motayoayinde: 10:05am On Sep 17, 2020
The Prophet (saw) married his first wife Khadija bint Khuwaylid at 25 while she was 40.
It was a blissful Marriage blessed with six kids.
At 40, when he was called to Prophethood, Khadija was 55.
When Khadija died at 65, the Prophet was 50.
They'd been married for 25 years.

The death of Khadija was particularly difficult for the Prophet. He'd lost not just a wife but also a comforter and a staunch supporter. Worse still, it happened in the year that the Makkah society ostracized the Muslims when torture and killing didn't stop the message.

MARRIAGES AFTER KHADIJA'S DEATH
2. In that year, he married an elderly widow, Sawdah bint Zam'ah.

3. Later in that year, his closest friend Abu bakr proposed that he married his daughter, Aisha.
He married her at six and consummated the marriage when she was nine.
This marriage has raised so much dust in recent times. We'll look at it further.

4. Hafsah bint Umar, the daughter of another close companion, Umar bn Khattab was married at the instance of Umar. She was married as a widow.

5. Zaynab bint Khuzaymah was his fifth wife, married as a widow.

6. Umm Salamah bint Abu Umayya was his sixth wife, married as a widow.

7. Juwairiyyah bint Harith, was his 7th wife.

8.Zaynab bint Jahsh was married after her divorce with Zayd bn Harith

9. Umm Habeebah bint Abu Sufyan was also a widow when the Prophet married her.

10. Maymoonah bint Al Harith, also married as a widow.

11. Safiyyah bint Uyayy was a Jew, captured in the battle of Khaybar, set free and agreed to marry the Prophet.

12. Maariyatu bint Sham'un Al Qibtiyya was sent to the Prophet as a gift by the Christian king of Alexandria, Maqawqis. She was married to the Prophet and bore him a son, Ibrahim. She was the only other woman who had a child for the Prophet apart from Khadija.

13. Rayhaanah bint Amr was the only woman whose marital status is debated among scholars. While some say she was married to the Prophet, others say she was a concubine.

TAKING ON THE ISSUES.
Let's examine some the issues thrown up all the time by Non Muslims and address the misunderstandings (and at times, mischief)

HIS "HAREM" OF WOMEN
It's clear from the foregoing that the Prophet had 13 wives and this is what is authentic according to the Prophet's history and renowned Islamic scholars. His wives were not 23 or 32 or any other number conjured up in the minds of islamophobes who pretend to know more Muslim history than the Muslims.
If the Prophet had more wives, the Muslims will be first to state it.

Polygamy as well as other marital practices like Marriage to minors and concubinage had been entrenched in the Middle East long before the Prophet was born.

Let's look at a few key figures among the Semites whose marital records are still available.

Prophet Ibrahim/Abraham, patriarch of the Semitic tribes, was married to three women: Sarah, Hagar and Keturah. He also had several concubines. Gen 11:29, 16:3, 25:1 1st chronicles 1:32

Prophet Jacob: 2 wives, Leah, Rachel and 2 concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah.

Prophet David through whom Jesus came, had wives and concubines. When, according the to bible, he killed Uriel, took his wife and impregnated her, God rebuked him and said if he had asked for more women, he'd have been given.

Prophet Solomon; 700 wives and 300 concubines.

Prophet Muhammad, 13 wives.

The comparison with the Prophet (saw)
is necessary so that Christians and Jews who praise these Jewish Prophets to high heavens, answer the name "Solomon", christen their sons "David" but lampoon Muhammad (saw), can be face to face with their double standards.

HIS MARRIAGE TO AISHA
The Prophet's Marriage to Aisha has been mentioned earlier. However, the uproar over her age at the time of the marriage deserves clarification.

This uproar is fairly recent. Before the dominance of modern western culture, Marriage to minors was common in many cultures around the world and in the Middle East in particular.

In the Jewish culture, little girls as little as 3 years old could be married off by the father according to the Halakha, a set of Jewish laws. The legal age of marriage for girls in Jewish law generally however, is 12 years and 1 day.

The ancient Arab society was also not different. It was in this culture that the Prophet was born. If the Prophet's marriage to Aisha was as revulsive in the Prophet's time as it seems to many today, he would have been maligned to death over it by his sworn enemies among the Jews and idolators of Madinah.
But no such account is found in history.
It was simply the practice.

HIS MARRIAGE TO ZAYNAB BINT JAHSH
Zayd bn Haritha was Khadija's slave, set free by the Prophet. HE WAS NOT HIS BIOLOGICAL SON.

Zaynab was his cousin.

He wedded them together so as to remove the stigma over Zayd as an ex slave and to show that an ex slave could be married to a free born.

The stigma didn't go away. Zaynab was unhappy that she was being referred to as the wife of an ex slave.

The marriage suffered, Zayd divorced Zaynab in the end.

All parties felt bad, the Prophet in particular.

He thought of marrying Zaynab but was wary of the comments of detractors. Then, verses were revealed which addressed the matter.

Verses 5 and 50 of chapter 33 clarify that although the Prophet was close to Zayd, he was not his father and as such could marry his divorced wife and not run foul of Allah's law which prohibits father and son from ever marrying same woman.

CONCLUSION
Prophet Muhammad (saw) was a 7th century, Middle Eastern, Arab Prophet. His marriages were according to the customs of his people and time. Some prominent Jewish figures who were Prophets like him, married according to similar customs.
Singling him out of his generation and predecessors in the 21st century, for condemnation over a common practice of his time is to say the least, hypocritical.

THE PROPHET WAS MARRIED AND FAITHFULLY SO, TO HIS OLDER WIFE FOR 25YEARS.

THIS WAS UNCOMMON IN THE MAKKAN SOCIETY THAT HE LIVED IN.

Stop lying to people.

Khadija was the one that married muhammad, muhammad didnt marry her.

Khadija was the breadwinner of the family

Khadija was Muhammad's boss before she chose to marry him

Muhammad didnt have his own money to marry another wife and that was why after khadijah's death and muhammad inherited her wealth, he started marrying numerous women

THIS WAS UNCOMMON IN THE MAKKAN SOCIETY THAT HE LIVED IN.

Mention one other wealthy woman that married her employee like Khadija married muhammad.

And show us whether such a man dared to marry another woman

FIRST, I DONT SEE WHAT YOUR POST PROVES.
IT DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING, IT'S JUST PLAINLY IRRELEVANT.
KHADIJA WAS THE BREADWINNER AND SO WHAT?

SECONDLY, IF YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ISLAM WASN'T SHALLOW, YOU'LL KNOW THAT PRIOR TO KHADIJA'S DEATH, THE MUSLIMS WERE OSTRACIZED AND WERE FORCED TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF MAKKAH WHERE THEY REMAINED FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS, ENDURING SEVERE HARDSHIP IN CRUEL WEATHER. THE BOYCOTT WAS TOTAL.
THE MUSLIMS LOST ALMOST EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE PROPHET'S FAMILY.
THERE ARE SEVERAL HADITHS DESCRIBING THE HUNGER THAT THE PROPHET'S FAMILY AND THE MUSLIMS SUFFERED.

IT WAS IN THIS GRUELLING CONDITIONS THAT KHADIJA DIED. THESE WERE THE WORST YEARS OF THE PERSECUTION OF MISLIMS IN MAKKAH.

IN ALL THESE, WHERE DID KHADIJA GET THE BILLION DHIRHAM ESTATE SHE LEFT THE PROPHET TO MARRY WIVES AFTER HER DEATH?

THIRDLY, THERES ONLY ONE REASON WHY THE PROPHET MARRIED MORE WOMEN AFTER KHADIJA'S DEATH.
HE GOT ALLAH'S PERMISSION TO DO SO.

HE DIDN'T NEED TONS OF MONEY TO DO SO.

Stop being melodramatic.

Answer simple questions.

Did Khadijah marry Muhammad or not?

Was Khadija not Muhammad's boss before she married him or not?

Was Khadijah the breadwinner of the family or not?

So khadijah being the breadwinner of the family would have allowed Muhammad to marry another wives and use her money to be feeding them?

Did Muhammad inherit khadijah's wealth or not?

Was it not after Muhammad became rich from Khadijah's wealth he started marrying numerous women?

Answer those questions sincerely.

The number 3 above is a big fat lie. Abu Bakr never proposed, to mohammed, to marry his 6 year old girl. No sane man will propose, to a man of 51 years old, to marry his 6-year old daughter. Mohammed did the proposal himself by claiming that allah showed Aisha to him in a dream.

Like True2god said, you're lying and whitewashing what actually happened.

Muhammad was the one that asked for Aisha's hand in marriage

Abu Bakr never proposed to Muhammad to marry his daughter, in fact Abu Bakr was reluctant to give Aisha to Muhammad using the excuse that he and muhammad were brothers. But Muhammad said they were only brothers in Islam.

Narrated By 'Ursa
The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for 'Aisha's hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said "But I am your brother." The Prophet said, "You are my brother in Allah's religion and His Book, but she ('Aisha) is lawful for me to marry."

Worth the read.
