He cut the line. Moni was angry he would not be coming tonight. But no problem, she would carry out her plan any other time he came around.

* * *

Ola was in a happy mood. At the club he frequented in Ikeja, he was all smiles. Some minutes ago, Moni had called him to assure that Agbaman would be coming to the house that evening.

She had further assured that, whatever would be the case, she would use the “substance’’ on him. He had been greatly gladdened about the news.

He imagined what the situation would be once Agbaman was out of the picture. Of course, he would use Moni as a gold mine that must be fully explored. That was the purpose all along. He must make sure he got the best from her.

He played snooker, but this time around not with Anthony. Deji was an acquaintance he also sometimes played with. Again, his mood must have goaded him as he won the games.

After more game, he went to the bar to have his regular drinks and barbecue. His mind went to Moni. He hoped by now, Yomi was in the house and Moni was able to administer the drug. He hoped for the best.

He thought of Mercy. Why, he had not heard from her for some time. He decided to give her a call.

“Hello, Mercy baby.”

“Hello, the Don. How’s everything?”

“All is fine, but I’m missing you. Can you come around to the club? It will be good to have you here.”

She appeared to briefly think over what he said. “I’m sorry, I won’t be able to make it. Maybe some other time.”

Maybe some other time! It was apparent Mercy was avoiding him, wasn’t it?

“I was thinking you could come,” he said.

“Sorry I won’t be able to make it,” she responded. “I’m kind of busy.”

He grimaced. She had given this excuse before. Since Mercy got the television job, she had been evasive.

He shrugged. “It’s okay.”

If Mercy would not be seeing him again, no problem. He continued with his drinks. When it was few minutes after nine, he decided to call it a day. He went to the car park, slid inside his car and drove out of the club.

The traffic was light, but he drove slowly. At a junction on Isaac John Street, a car that had been moving steadily behind his car suddenly overtook him and crossed his park. Now, what kind of rough driving was this?

But the matter was beyond rough driving. Quickly, in a Rambo-like operation, two men jumped out of the car, brandishing gun, and moved to his car. It was the first time in his life that a gun would be pointed menacingly at him; and at close range too.

“Out of the car!” one of the two men bawled at him.

Why don’t you reverse and drive off from them? Part of his mind screamed at him. But he could not do that. Another car had closed in on him from behind and he was sandwiched.

They opened his side door and hoisted him out of the car. Fear gripped him. Were they robbers? Kidnappers? Who were they?

At gun point, they roughly led him to their car at the front and forced him inside at the back seat. A handkerchief was stuffed to his nose and everything became blurry. That was the last thing Ola remembered.

* * *

Boma was on night duty at the hospital where she worked. She had gone round the ward to check patients and she had returned. She sat down and studied some case notes on the table before her.

She yawned. It was just few minutes to ten p.m., but she felt very sleepy. She still had some work to do, but she could quickly take a nap for now.

She put her head on the desk and soon slept off. She had a short dream and it was about her husband, Ola. He was in a pit and was crying for help. How did he get there? What could she do? She was helpless while he would not stop crying for help.

Boma woke up. She stretched and looked at the wall clock. It was few minutes to eleven p.m. God, what kind of dream was this? She had only slept briefly but it looked like she had been asleep for hours.

Her mind went back to the dream. Her dreams were not always ordinary? Could Ola be in danger?

She decided to call him. She would have to warn him to be careful and be very security conscious. She dialed his number but the number could not be reached.

She tried two more times, but could still not get through. That was serious. She always had easy access in getting through to him.

Next, she called Ruth’s number. This time, the receiver picked the call after the third ring.
