Jumoke Academy Honored By Caribbean Trade Council by Nobody: 7:32am On Feb 27, 2011
Dr. Michael Sharpe, CEO, is happy to announce that the Jumoke Academy Charter Schools have been recognized by Hartford's Caribbean Trade Council " at its annual Black History Month Celebration. According to the council's president, Andrew Lawrence, its "achievements in educating our young." The Caribbean Trade Council's mission is "to promote trade, tourism and economic cooperation between Metro-Hartford and the Caribbean Islands."

Keynote speaker for event, Walter "Doc" Hurley, the noted educational activist and founder of the Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation, stated "in this present day society, youngsters need a quality education in order to survive."

Jumoke Academy stresses the important combination of personal responsibility, family support, caring and engaged teachers and staff, a rigorous curriculum, and a positive environment to ensure their students' success both in and out of the classroom. Mr. Hurley supports this philosophy, saying in his speech, "Get behind them (students,) mentor them, and support them, so that they will adopt the more positive things in life."

Ms. Doreen Crawford, principal of Jumoke Academy Middle School said, "A lot of our students have Caribbean backgrounds. Being recognized by the Caribbean community, via the Caribbean Trade Council, encourages our students to continue with their hard work, dedication and achievement."

In 1997, Thelma Ellis Dickerson founded Jumoke Academy under the state's new Public Charter School Law. At the age of 75, she took initiative to provide the children of Hartford a high quality education and the ability to close the achievement gap between urban and suburban students. "Jumoke," a Nigerian word from the Yoruba tribe meaning, "the child is loved," is the simple but profound ideal guiding the mission of Jumoke Academy Charter Schools. The academy has grown and prospered in the most difficult of educational and socio-economic settings and circumstances; what began as a kindergarten-third grade school with 125 students is now, nearly 14 years later, comprised of two charter schools, teaching 432 students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade.

I think she (Thelma Dickerson) named it that in order to connect with her African roots, not to categorize Nigerian achievers by ethnic group.

^^^ That's not my point. Before it was just "Nigerian". If you notice most of the recent Nigerian-related internation news, the reporters are more specific on the details.

Like the Igbo dude that killed his wife; they described his origin as "hailing from Anambra state".

From what I've seen, Africans know that there is more than just generically "Nigerian." They are aware of Yoruba and Igbo, and how we sort of don't like each other  grin  tongue

The western world too is interacting more with educated Nigerians, so they are learning the differences.

An example. . . www.jumo.com, a social networking site for charitable organizations founded by Chris Hughes (See his bio here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Hughes_(entrepreneur). Very interesting dude).

As you might have guessed from the name:

What does Jumo mean?
Jumo means "to come together" in the West African language of Yoruba.

So people are starting to learn.

Never knew Jumo meant to come together. . .
Interesting. Good, they need to keep educating themselves. So all these drug peddlers and wife-killers need to be distinguished and separated from the hardworking Nigerians, just incase Nigeria breaks apart. grin
