A centuries-old coin has been declared treasure after being found by a metal detectorist in a field in Norfolk.

The silver coin would have been adorned with gems which have fallen out over the centuries, and is believed to be 740 years old.

An image of historic King Alexander III of Scotland can be found on one side of the coin which is dated as being from 1280-6, and experts believe the artefact would have been worn as either a pendant or a brooch by someone that worked within religion.

It was discovered in Long Stratton, Norfolk in August 2019 but has only now been defined as treasure.

However, the historic find would not allow someone to relax in wealth, as it is believed to be worth the equivalent of £20 in current day value.

Dr Adrian Marsden, a numismatist at Norfolk Historic Environment Service has theorised the coin would have originated in Scotland, “must have been eventually lost” and had “travelled some way” to end up in the fields of Norfolk.

Dr Marsden told the BBC : “There is also settings for gems [which were no longer present] which represent the five wounds of Christ, so it is symbolic and adds to the religious dimension."

He explained that the original owner "would have been relatively well-off" as the penny was the equivalent of half a day's wage of 1280 standards.

He explained: ”It would have been a bit of a luxury and the owner would have some social status.”

However, he added: ”The coin was probably equivalent to £20 in today's money."

The BBC noted the coin “was declared treasure at an inquest at Norfolk Coroner's Court earlier this month.”

King Alexander III of Scotland ruled between 1249 and 1286 and is was a descendant of Macbeth, of Shakespearian lore.

The Norwich Castle Museum is hoping to acquire the coin to add to a collection of similar items.

Hmmm...

A national currency with "five wounds of Christ" in the 13th century, so "In God We Trust" was not even the first such religious inscription made in the national currency of a western nation.

The "five wounds of Christ" would likely denote the nail wounds on both of His hands and feet, and the wound on His pierced side.

The western nation appeared to take witnessing of Christ to another level, as these "five wounds of Christ" is the greatest ever thing to happen to mankind.

Without the shedding of blood there's no remission of sins, and it's via this wounds that His blood was shed. Hebrews 9:22

Jesus said, "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." Matthew 26:28

Jesus was wounded for ours transgressions and He died for our sins. He resurrected from the dead, and His wounds were also healed but the scars remain.

John 20:20 (KJV)

And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

Those scars could have been removed, but there's a reason it wasn't as the body of Jesus still bears those scars up til this very day.

It's for remembrance and serves as an eternal proof that Jesus had done His own part to save your soul, so if after all that Jesus had suffered for you to be saved, you still perish at the end because you don't do yours, you'd have no excuses.

#FivewoundsofChrist

God bless.

If the gems are no longer on it, then I believe somebody deliberate removed them before disposing of the coin/pendant itself.

After all, the gems are the real deal and the metal isn't worth all that much without them on it.

You see why we ask you people to read more history books rather than just bible-bash or read religious books??

So, you thought the USA was the first country on earth to have anything about God on its currency?? Hilarious.

Then you need to go back in time. Possibly to the time of the Byzantine empire and even, possibly, before then. Many countries were already doing that long before the Americans. America was never the first to do so.

Besides, I also figure, or should I say, suspect that you have no idea what role religion played in medieval Europe, where the kings of those times believed that they held their throne by divine right- in other words, they believed that whatever power they had was from God.

Medieval Europeans were fiercely religious and that was the reason several of the wars that were fought in the medieval era had religious undertones. And Scotland, where this coin originated from, wasn't left out. Scotland became latinized or Christianized in the 5th century- about 700-800 years before this coin was minted. So, you could see that the Christian faith was already deeply-rooted then.

And what about outside the West?

Man, just google-search medieval coins of ancient Armenia and read up on all you can find there.

On one of the coins, you are gonna find something like this:

"Leo, by the grace of God/ King of the Armenians".

smiley Read, read history, man. It is very interesting.

You mean the real history of fools?

Only fools consider the real history of the Bible not to be real.

Same fools that attribute the backwardness of Africa to religion, now say read real history of the advanced western world which was built on religion.

Confused souls.

Keep deceiving yourselves.
