Hello dear. How far with the enquires. Were you able to check out cook county hospital as well? smiley

Hummnn long story. I called the hosps and they said for the postpartum check up I need to do, I have to visit a health center, which I did since there was one 2mins away from me.

It wasn't a small something o! At 1st they asked if I had insurance, I said no, I will pay cash. The looked at me strangely, and went to call another person. I said I was visiting from Nigeria, that I will pay cash. They finally referred me to a doctor. The doctor was so efficient and friendly. She did a thorough check up, lungs, heart, BP, etc. Then based on my history, she had to check for what caused the bleeding that led to losing the babies but found nothing wrong, thus concluded that it was the placenta. My CS site has healed, cervix is good, uterus has returned to normal, did an internal exam to check for other things, time for my bill, she says oh, it's free.
Na so my heart start to pound. I said I am paying cash, she said, since I didn't have insurance, and generally this examination is free. See me, see trouble o!
She maintained it was a community clinic, some services were free, except I want to do a pap smear that will cost $180 because of the external lab they will use. This I tried to negotiate, she agreed for $160, and if I didn't have enough money I could pay what I had and pay the balance anytime. Abeg, I quickly paid the $160 and did the procedure.
I was told from Nigeria to wait for 6mths after the CS to try again for another baby, the US doc said she didn't understand what the wait was for, the CS has healed and I can try if I feel ready! (Yippeee!) She also gave me a referral to an Ob/Gyn in St. Joseph Hospital I can use when I am pregnant again, that I can negotiate now before I leave the US.

I just realised that community health centers are free and accessible to anyone needing primary care. There was no need for an appointment, you can walk in anytime. They also handle prenatal care and then refer you to a specialist if need be.
I will still connect to cook county when I have the time to get their quote. Sorry if this is quite long!

Good mrn house...thank God am finally out of the hsp after 3weeks of bed arrest...pls I have a question...
Has anyone with fibroid issue during pregnancy had their baby in us....I want to know if there is additional bill attached to this....I did some scans during my stay in the hsp and they found out I av a 24mm sized fibroid in me..I think it was the cause for the spotting I had that took me to d hsp...though my doc said its nothing to worry abt as d size is very small and it hardly grows with the pregnancy(+ my personal findings on d internet)
I really want to know if this will not add much to my bills ..thnx in advance for ur kind response...

I think if you have a CS they will clean up the womb before they close you up, which includes the fibroid. I don't think there will be an extra cost if there is no complication but I am no authority on this, just that when I had my CS in Nigeria, the doc said the delivery is not more than 15mins but they have to check the womb and ovaries before they close you up, so if there is a fibroid, they just take it out during the inspection. My opinion though

No! A Lot of Obgyns don't advocate a caeserean myomectomy because of the tendency to bleed excessively etc, so I doubt anyone will go looking for it except it hinders the process of bringing out the baby. And usually a 24mm fibroid in pregnancy isn't worrisome as most times it will shrink once the pregnancy hormones fade after delivery. But then again it's best to speak with your physician in particular and hear out his specific opinion and experience with c/s myomectomy +- embolization.

Abeg when you make contact with the ob/gyn from saint joseph pls share. Where in Chicago are you. Are you staying with relatives? If not how did you go about accommodation.
Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedure? by Basheerah1: 7:33am On Nov 07, 2014
Hey dear. I dont think you have anything to be worried about. To my knowledge a 24mm fibroid which is 2.4cm is quite insignificant. My cousin had a 120mm (12cm) fibroid while she was pregnant and delivered a healthy boy through the womanly procedure. As long as it doesn't interfere with your baby all you need do is do regular checkups to make sure its not growing.

During the early stages of my pregnancy I had a 50mm (5cm) corpus luteum cyst. I was really worried about it till my doctor set my mind at ease. He told me it will shrink when im approaching my 2nd trimester. While I was entering my second trimester I did another scan. This time I was told that I had a 50mm fibroid by the radiograpger. Hmmmn I was now wondring how a cyst could turn into a fibroid. Anyway I took the test results to my doctor and he said some could make that mistake. He told me to be patient and do another scan in a months time. Last week I did the scan and low and behold no more cyst/fibroid. Apparently it had shrunk.

I think you should see your physician to set your mind more at ease. Then scan at least once a month or more (at the discretion of your physician) to make sure its not growing. You could ask your physician of the possibility of the fibroid being cyst as well. It is well dearie.

@Tenic09. during my first trimester they also found a 24mm fibroid. But by 2nd trimester I went for my next scan, nothing was found again. Even till now. So the size is really insignificant to be worried about. By the time you are ready to give birth, they can check for it again, if its still there, its at your own discretion to let them take it out.

Thanks lizcom25. Indeed it was smooth for her and I give God all the glory. She says they did not really question her, it felt more like casual conversation and she was done in a few minutes.

No problem Mrsfad2014, when she has settled down and I have more details of the POE experience, I will share.

I am with relatives, will share the ob/gyn's details after I speak with her.
And lol, I hope all the tests come out negative o! Since it was screening for infections, cervical cancer and HPV virus.

By the way, I wonder why it hasn't been made mandatory to have a pelvic exam and a pap smear in Nigeria. The doctor could not believe that at my age I had not had a pap smear, which is why she eventually suggested a pap smear should be done, and the results last for 5years! A friend of mine explained that cervical cancer takes 20years to develop and finally become a problem, so in developed countries, they prefer to catch it early, because at that stage, it is treatable. Still, I wonder why we take it for granted o!

Me: Thank you.

Please I would like to know if anyone has information on Hospitals in Maryland, Dallas and Tennessee(Nashville). These are the likely places I would stay wen I travel.

Thank you.

If you have a gynaecologist here in Nigeria, he/she would've told you to do a pelvic exam every year or at least a pap smear.

I've been back in Nigeria since 2006 and done one every year since then.

Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedure? by Lotalways: 2:17pm On Nov 07, 2014
BRITISH AIRWAYS POLICY FOR PREGNANT TRAVELERS-

For uncomplicated single pregnancies, we restrict travel beyond the end of the 36th week, and for twins, triplets etc., beyond the end of the 32nd week. After your pregnancy has entered its 28th week, we ask that you carry with you a letter from your doctor or midwife, stating the pregnancy is uncomplicated and confirming the expected date of delivery. In this letter, your doctor should state that you are in good health, that they are happy for you to fly, and that (in their opinion) there is no reason why you cannot fly.

A friend of mine had her baby in New Jersey last year via CS and also took out existing fibroids immediately after. She was charged separately for removing the fibroids, and for the CS. Reason being 2 entirely different procedures.
So I would advice you to do your homework well. Rest and take lots of fluids. Wish you a safe delivery.

Hey guyz, its my first time here and really i'm impressed with the kind of assistance people render on this platform. Nigerians are good people no matter what!
Please is it possible to apply for US visa for the purpose of child birth without being pregnant yet. A friend has suffered multiple still births and just prefer to do the next one there, which makes sense to me. Is it a valid excuse? She has her medical history in case oyinbo asks for it

what county are u staying at?
1) Holy Cross hospital
2) prince Georges Hospital
these are in Baltimore
3) university of Maryland upper Chesapeake hospiital
4) medstar Franklin square hospital
these are in Harford county

ob/gyn:1/2-Moore ob/gyn
ob/gyn: 3- Susquehanna medical centre, Dr.Bahm

VIP*
Maryland isn't like most states where they really give credence to self pay.
highest discount possible is 2%for prompt pay upon discharge and not all hospital honor that. But u can get discounts from your ob/gyn

also, cos Maryland is expensive, they rarely have international patient, hence its almost difficult to get information on estimated cost of delivery. Had a really tough time too

don't have info on accommodation.

hope this helps
