SWAT IS NOT GOOD. IT'S ARMING CITIZENS AGAINST THEMSELVES. SO PLEASE STOP THIS NONSENSE AND DECENTRALIZE POLICE SERVICES TO THE 36 CONSTITUTIONAL STATES IMMEDIATELY.

Hmm, i knew it will endup like this, they are deceiving their selves thinking we are the one they're deceiving... If they like, let them rename SARS to SHERIFF, FBI we don't care, we just don't want to be menaced, harrassed... Brainless and confused leaders

S-SARS
W-WITH
A-ANOTHER
T-TITLE.

Of course it will be foolhardy on the IG's part to dismiss the members of SARS as that will be disastrous to the country, because many of them will become so wild that their wings won't be clipped, let's just hope this replacement will yield a good result.

Below from Wikipedia:

"In the United States, a SWAT (special weapons and tactics) team is a law enforcement unit which uses specialized or military equipment and tactics. Although they were first created in the 1960s to handle riot control or violent confrontations with criminals, the number and usage of SWAT teams increased in the 1980s and 1990s during the War on Drugs and later in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In the United States as of 2005, SWAT teams were deployed 50,000 times every year, almost 80% of the time to serve search warrants, most often for narcotics. SWAT teams are increasingly equipped with military-type hardware and trained to deploy against threats of terrorism, for crowd control, hostage taking, and in situations beyond the capabilities of ordinary law enforcement, sometimes deemed "high-risk". Other countries have developed their own paramilitary police units (PPUs) which are also described as or comparable to SWAT forces.

SWAT team members prepare for an exercise.

U.S. FBI agents undergoing hostage rescue training and helicopter fast rope insertion training
SWAT units are often equipped with automatic and specialized firearms, including submachine guns, assault rifles, riot shotguns, sniper rifles, riot guns, riot control agents, tear gas, smoke, and stun grenades. In addition, they may use specialized equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, armored vehicles, thermal and night vision devices, and motion detectors for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers, inside enclosed structures"

Nigeria's SWAT should ONLY be deployed when there is a SERIOUS, ORGANISED, ARMED THREAT THAT REGULAR POLICE CAN NOT HANDLE..

SWAT MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO INVESTIGATE CRIME; ONLY DEPLOYMENT TO DEAL WITH A MAJOR VIOLENT CRIME SITUATION LIKE ARMED ROBBERY, TERRORISM, ARMED INSURRECTION ETC

The name SWAT sounds impressive. I hope they won't dress in rags like their dead bros SARS.

We will wait and see. Though this first step, gives up a lot as to their unseriousness. To start with, I will like to see what the ‘Special Weapons ....’ will be. Standard issue AK47 ba?

That is how the military went about naming battalions ‘special forces’ after watching American movies. I knew nothing distinguishing will be observed with normal troops. Serious nations create unique identities with the naming of spec ops. For example, US Navy SEALs, Delta Force,, Green Beret. Israel has Sayeret Matkal, Russia Spetsnaz etc. Even other African nations have unique spec ops identities. We just copy ‘special forces‘ as names after watching American movies. Lazy, so annoying. Names are easy to conjure. Special Tactical and Amoury (STM), Special Tactical Unit (STU), Tactical Intervention Unit (TIU)... I just made all that up now... easily

They just created a needless controversy with the choice of SWAT. The easiest task in the entire journey. Disappointing!
What you have STU, and they behave like SARS. It's not about the name but the result. White House is used by many countries apart from US

Sw in SWAT means special weapons, our army is still complaining about good weapons and this one is talking about special weapon, Nigeria is just a brutal comedy.

Look, it is what you called your dog that it answers. US SWAT can be different from Nigerian SWAT. It is no problem if our own SWAT responds rapidly to incidences of armed robbery and violent crimes. As you make your bed, so you will sleep on it.

I disagree. Speaks a lot. See the avoidable contention on the internet. It already bodes badly. This govt is notorious for copying... and doing it Badly. Let’s see if they will get a fraction of swat level training

You wonder what else they are doing copy and paste. We don’t have leaders.

I don't think you understand my post.. nothing wrong with the concept of "SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS" (SWAT) if Nigeria sticks to the concept as implemented in USA..

So what exactly is your disagreement

Government should direct funds to the right places.. the problem is systemic.. we can come up with funds.. the security vote of governors for example..
Wasteful spending by FG and states should be cut..

Nigeria doesn't, necessarily, need to stick "to the concept as implemented in USA". Nigeria is not US. We can adapt to local peculiarities minus the criminality and other excesses of the SARS.

Re: IGP Announces SWAT To Replace Scrapped SARS by sonofElElyon: 1:11pm On Oct 14, 2020
Deploy them only if there is a situation. They need not be allowed to conduct investigation or interrogate like they are doing. It should be a response team to a grave situation that regular police can't handle.
This is the US model and deviating from this will take us back to the same problem..
Your suggestion that we adapt to our own peculiarities (whatever that means) is exactly what got us here in the first place.

No, what got us here is lack of quality supervision and lack of accountability on the part of police leadership. Then lack of oversight from National Assembly and lack of response from the Executive to the consistent cries of the citizens for several years of police excesses.

#EndSWAT biko. SARS may be child's play compare to it.
Re: IGP Announces SWAT To Replace Scrapped SARS by sonofElElyon: 3:19pm On Oct 14, 2020
Anyway, point being made is that they shouldn't be allowed to detect crime, investigate, interrogate etc.. just deploy them to respond to situations and hand over arrested suspects to another specialised department for further police work. That's what obtains in USA where the idea first came up and it's working well there..
Any attempt to expand their functions would get us back into the same quagmire

Kudos to the guys and ladies that understood the plan of these people.

They thought Nigerians are fools!!!!

No way, SWAT and SARS are the same.

Its either we call for break or total restructuring of all Govt institutions including the Police and Military.

We are the ones to dictate to Govt what we want, we have the absolute power.
