EndSARS protesters who were attacked in Osogbo on Thursday have stated that the government was responsible for the mayhem that characterized their protest today.

Insightmedia has reported that some hoodlums clashed with protesters in Osogbo, Osun State capital, leaving about four people injured.

Speaking at a press conference today, one of the leaders of the protest, Olawale Bakare said they were attacked by thugs led by a popular leader NURTW leader, Asiri Eniba and his people.

Bakare said the protest has been peaceful for about six days until some people infiltrated them on Wednesday and showed their intentions on Thursday. He added that the thugs that attacked them were majorly sponsored by the state government.

While calling on well meaning Nigerians to call the state government officials to order, Bakare added that the group will continue to push their demands until they are all achieved.

The statement reads, “About a week ago, we the youth of Osun State embark on a peaceful protest to register our grievances about the dreaded and notorious special anti robbery squad of the Nigeria Police Force Popularly known as SARS/FSARS. A unit which has continually terrorized Nigerians and the youth in particular. This exercise has continued peacefully until the early hours of today when we were attacked by thug and associate of the government popularly known as Asiri Eniba. He was spotted on the scene in the company of his boys numbering about 50. Each of them was armed with dangerous weapons including guns and cutlasses.

“In light of these, we condemn this anti-democratic tendency of the State Government which is antithetical to the tents of governance. This is also an infringement on our fundamental rights of association and expression as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.

“Also we want to seize this medium to debunk some allegations leveled against certain members of the movement where we are portrayed as violent or troublesome which is nothing but a flagrant attempt by the government to call a dog a bad name in order to hang it. 

 

When asked if the group is factionalized, Bakare said “we have never been factionalized. We remain on indivisible group fighting a course. Although, we realized that the government has planted some elements in our midst with intentions of causing violence and blaming it on us, but we have not allowed them to operate. We remain one group of Osun youths fighting for our right.

He called on other Protesters in other cities of the state to come down to the state capital and join them so that “our voices can be collectively heard and all well meaning Nigerians to call the government to order and restrain from destroying the relative peace the state has always enjoyed.”
