Wow, 2020 is an interesting year , but we are grateful for being alive despite this pandemic. Now, we bring you our top ten Nigerian Fantasy Novels- the A-List or those that have been for a long time, and those that are not relenting.


1. Zarah the Flame Keeper by - NNEDI OKORAFOR
Here, monkeys tell fortunes, plants offer wisdom, and a teenage girl is the only one who can save her best friend’s life. It received:
• 2008 Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature
• The Black Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Literature (Fiction).

2. Children of Blood and Bone by - TOMI ADEYEMI
Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against a king. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

3. Beast Made of Night by - TOCHI ONYEBUCHI
Another YA that features mythical creatures made from sin. Taj is a sin-eater, indentured to a mage to slay the sin beasts. Most sin-eaters eventually go mad. Beasts Made of Night is full of political intrigue and injustice
- It won the 2018 Ilube Nommo Award for Best Speculative Fiction Novel by an African.

4. The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi

This a 2005 novel that is still amongst the top A-List fantasy and psychological fiction. This is a story about a young girl named Jessamy Wuraola Harrison, an interracial child from an English father and a Nigerian mother. She doesn’t feel a sense of belonging in her school because of her extraordinary imagination. It is until when she visits Nigeria and makes a friend named Tillytilly that she feels acceptance and familiarity, but Jess soon realizes that ‘A book should not be judged by his cover’.

7. Rosewater by Tade Thompson
Rosewater is more science fiction than fantasy. An alien biodome mysteriously appears in Nigeria, healing some when it opens, but also reanimating corpses. Kaaro is a reluctant secret psychic agent, and as his fellow psychics start dying of a mysterious illness, he becomes enmired in something he doesn’t understand but must figure out.

8. Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okarafor
Onye embarks on a journey during which she grapples with nature, tradition, history, true love, and the spiritual mysteries of her people in an apocalyptic Africa.

9. Riot Baby by - TOCHI ONYEBUCHI
This is his first novel for adults about a lady called Ella who can see things that haven’t happened yet and as her power grows, her brother Kevin tries to protect her from it but he ends up being jailed. This is a story about family, power, racism and injustice.

10. The Palmwine Drinkard by Amos Tutuola
The novel was the first Nigerian book to achieve international fame. The story is a classic quest tale in which the hero, a lazy boy who likes to spend his days drinking palm wine, gains wisdom, confronts death, and overcomes many perils in the course of his journey.

11. Akata Witch/What Sunny Saw in the Flame
The novel was the first Nigerian book to achieve international fame. The story is a classic quest tale in which the hero, a lazy boy who likes to spend his days drinking palm wine, gains wisdom, confronts death, and overcomes many perils in the course of his journey.

12. The Infinite Leap by Patience Agbabi
This is a time travel fantasy novel that brings us into an era where kids born on the 29th of February possesses the ability to travel through time.
Bibi-imbele receives a warning from the future and now it is up to her to find out the reason why kids like her are disappearing. This definitely will remind young ones out there about ‘The Flash’.

You're Right... It should be Speculative fiction as they all are sub-genres of speculative fictions.
